DC: German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday the European Union should stand up an independent military force, backing a proposal floated by French President Emmanuel Macron earlier in November.
In a speech to EU ministers in Strasbourg, France, Merkel said recent events have proven that Europe needs an army of its own.
“What is really important, if we look at the developments of the past year, is that we have to work on a vision of one day creating a real, true European army,” she said, according to the Daily Mail.
The reference to “developments of the past year” appeared to refer to President Donald Trump, who has on several occasions denounced European nations for what he sees as insufficient contributions to the U.S.-led NATO security alliance. Merkel also called for defense policy to be coordinated through a new European Security Council that would work with, but be independent from, NATO.
Merkel’s speech comes a week after Macron first broached the idea of creating an EU army in light of Russian military interventions in Ukraine and Trump’s recent decision to pull out of a Cold War-era arms control pact. Europe needs its own continental military force to protect against Russia, China and even the U.S., Macron said
Macron’s comment drew a swift rebuke from Trump, who called the suggestion “insulting” and told the French leader to focus on boosting his country’s NATO contributions. Trump slammed Macron again on Tuesday morning, ridiculing French losses in both World Wars and demanding that France reduce its tariffs on U.S. wine.
“Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the U.S., China and Russia,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “But it was Germany in World Wars One & Two — How did that work out for France? They were starting to learn German in Paris before the U.S. came along. Pay for NATO or not!”

I find it hard to believe that soldiers in the European Union Army would be highly motivated to protect the European Union. Can you imagine how pissed off you’d be if you were a young man from Holland, France or Germany who got drafted to fight for a bunch of bureaucrats in Belgium? Would you like to be the EU officer who has to track down draft dodgers?
If each individual nation still maintains its own armed forces, the EU would be setting the stage for a major war and find out just how few friends they really have.

When President Trump made his statement about NATO….Germany had 128 front line jet fighters, but only 10 could fly.
And they only had enough missiles to outfit four of those. But they were spending billions on a pipeline from Russia.

Apparently, in addition to all their other lunacies, those major league twits have NO idea what it takes to produce quality military materiel in sufficient quantities to be effective. V. D. Hanson’s fantastic book on the second world war(s) showed that even Germany in WW2 couldn’t produce enough to keep the allies (actually us and the Russians) at bay, once we got geared up.

NATO should now be limited to Scandinavian countries and Eastern Europe. The Third Worldization of Western Europe will continue and then we can vacation in Budapest, Prague and Warsaw. Those Nordic countries need to take care of that migrant problem though. Maybe Sweden can ally with Germany or at least remain neutral.

It took the UK until 2006 to pay off its WW2 debt to the United States. Germany got off far to easily after the war and should still be to this day paying restitution instead of becoming the economic powerhouse that it is today.
