Musburger: I Will Not Vote Sam Darnold for Heisman if USC Changes Its Horse’s Name

NTK- Legendary sports broadcaster Brent Musburger said he would not vote for the University of Southern California’s quarterback Sam Darnold for the Heisman Trophy if USC changed the name of its horse during an interview on the popular Barstool Sport’s podcast, “Pardon my Take.”

USC is currently considering changing the name of its horse from Traveler because Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee favorite horse shared the same name.

  1. What in the Sam Hill does Sam Darnold have to do with the name of the horse? I personally think it is stupid to change the name but has Sam been leading the charge to change it? What a dumb dumb threat.

  2. “USC.” “Cunfederates.” The way I see it, as a poor speller, is that both have “U” “S” and “C” in them. I think we should violently boycott USC football games until the university comes up different initials. Maybe wear clown masks and ambush hot dog vendors, or steal programs without paying for them. Something stupid and pointless in any event.

  3. I am reading this as Musburger’s stand AGAINST the idiocy that is currently overtaking the country. There is a implied benefit to a school for having a Heisman Trophy winner play in their program. By not voting for the USC quarterback he is taking a swipe at the school. The player involved is collateral damage.

A few years ago alums from my daughter’s school (Ithaca) were up in arms when the admin attempted to change the nickname from Bombers to something ‘less violent’. They are still the Bombers. Sometimes stupid efforts can be thwarted.

  4. the dolfer,
I understand that Musburger is taking a “conservative” stand but I still think he is doing it stupidly. Again, I ask–what does the QB have to do with it? This is analogous to the stupidity for punishing a whole team for the bad acts of one player (who then goes straight to the NFL). I also understand that Musburger is not giving into mass hysteria du jour and the importance of a Heisman Trophy to a school but I think it is most important to the player. Now, if you can show me the QB is leading the charge to change Traveler’s name, I will say “I was wrong.”
