RIP Charles Grodin

AP – Charles Grodin, the droll, offbeat actor and writer who scored as a caddish newlywed in “The Heartbreak Kid” and later had roles ranging from Robert De Niro’s counterpart in the comic thriller “Midnight Run” to the bedeviled father in the “Beethoven” comedies, has died. He was 86.

Grodin died Tuesday in Wilton, Connecticut, from bone marrow cancer, his son, Nicholas Grodin, said.

Known for his dead-pan style and everyday looks, Grodin also appeared in “Dave,” “The Woman in Red,” “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Heaven Can Wait.” On Broadway, he starred with Ellen Burstyn in the long-running 1970s comedy “Same Time, Next Year,” and he found many other outlets for his talents.

With bone-dry understatement, Grodin could steal entire scenes with just a look.

  1. I always liked his accountant character in “Dave” who was tasked with reducing the size of the US government’s budget to stay “on budget”.
Thank you for posting, I think I will look at some “Dave” clips on youtube.

  2. Yeah he was pretty good on Johnny wasn’t he? Forgot all about that. He was perfect in Midnight Run. Haven’t a clue about his politics. Thank you Charles for that.

    God speed dude. Happy travels

  3. I don’t know enough about him to comment.

So many Whore-wood actors have undermined individual rights and become collectivists that I very rarely put faith in them.

In Music, Roger Waters, has spoiled Pink Floyd for me FOREVER. He is a Jew hater and blames the middle east’s only democracy. His Blue ray WILL meet a horrible & disgusting end. I promise.

I love Dave Gilmour, but know nothing about his politics, thus I will keep his Blu Ray. Hope it stays that way.

The way things are going, I will sell off my audio racks & speakers. I’m too bitter these days to watch most media.

  4. Have to disagree with Grool.
Charles was great in the 1976 King Kong.
Played a smarmy, greedy narcissist perfectly.
I loved that movie and saw it in the cinema on opening night.
It was long and the first movie I had seen that had an intermission.
The 1976 version didn’t have near the technology but was far better that the recent Peter Jackson film.
Hell, how can you knock a movie that highlights Jessica Lange and the Twin Towers?

  5. Tony, thank you for clarifying that. The guy ranks down there with Andy Griffith: there’s aspects of his work I’ve enjoyed (inasmuch as he pretended to be other people, big deal) but his real life ideology marks him as an enemy of the nation. I can’t view any of their work dispassionately once I know that.

  6. He was in the 1978 TV movie “The Grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank” with Carol Burnett. Best part of that film was that it should my parents’ house, my 1976 Ford Pinto, and my parents’ 1973 Buick moments before I took my mother grocery shopping in it.

  7. I wasn’t aware of his politics and I try not to know.
I wouldn’t be able to watch anything.
That said, he was in a lot of good movies, Heaven Can Wait, The Woman in Red, Rosemary’s Baby, & Seems Like Old Times which I really liked.

  8. RIP Mr. Grodin. He use to do radio commentary about 15 years ago on WABC NY. It was a 1 minute monologue about what every subject he thought was important for the time. This was about 15 year ago. Geez, times are changing and people are passing on.

    Say your prayers everyday!

    God Bless us all!

  10. I saw Heartbreak Kid WAY back when it came out and found it very disturbing–I just checked and full length is on YouTube and I skipped around and again I found it disturbing. Elaine May a comedian I guess but what a crappy story IMO

I did enjoy Chas. Grodin, however. RIP even though I probably hated his politiks

  12. I don’t believe I’d seen Midnight Run and thought I’d give it a go. I was not aware of Grodin’s extreme leftism so I’d have watched it. Would have until I saw that De Niro is in it. Not going to watch anything that whack job is a part of.

  13. I think he had an interesting feature on CBS-TV back in the day: “On The Road With Charles Grodin” where he’d visit out-of-the-way towns with off-beat stories.
