David Sanborn, an influential saxophonist who blended jazz, pop, and R&B in his solo work while playing with the biggest pop and rock artists of the era, died Sunday. A statement posted to his social media accounts said he’d long battled prostate cancer. He was 78.
Eight of the more than two dozen albums he released, beginning in 1975, went gold, and one went platinum. He won six Grammys. Born in Tampa and raised in St. Louis, Sanborn began playing after being diagnosed with polio at age 3.
Nooooooo, I love his music. The saxophone is one of my favorite instruments to listen to.
RIP David. You will be missed.
RIP David.
I played alto sax in grade school orchestra and my older brother played tenor. I always loved that sound.
I have a couple CDs of his music.
He was an excellent musician.
After Duane Eddy died last week, I listened to some music he collaborated on.
Speaking of saxophones, maybe the meanest sax of all was on Peter Gunn, a great piece from the early sixties, and a TV show also. The sax growls throughout the whole thing like a huge predator. I think Mr. Eddy provided the guitar track.
^^^^^^
Not the Mancini version, but the version on one of Duane Eddy’s albums.
Sanborn was prolific and stellar. Great sound, he was a distinct soloist.
He was also the victim of plenty racism early on via the Jazz Royalty who posited that only blacks could play jazz.
About twenty years ago I was kinda getting into jazz for about a minute and a half. This guy was the reason. A very talented man.
I tried to enjoy jazz because, I don’t remember why, But several of us went to a Herbie Hancock and some other famous guy. We were in the 6th row, center stage, and we all fell asleep. That might have been the end of my jazz experience.

LMFAO. Same here. And back then I was a smooth operator.
Haha, smooth operator….haha!
^^^^ Snicker. LOL. I just knew you’d get that.
From the same album (above) shown on Letterman. Sometime around 1986.

RIP
Enjoyed his music.
So much to like… “Put it Where You Want It” is one of my favorites.
RIP Dave!
Well, crap. I loved his music.
How many people have played the saxophone?
But if you have any ear at all, you can recognize David Sanborn’s very easily. Great musician. RIP sir.
Caught the news on SiriusXM’s Watercolors yesterday while driving. Almost jumped a curb. Tremendously saddened by the news. A giant has passed from us. Just happy to see the tremendous collection of music he leaves behind, and I’ve got most of it. RIP Dave.
How one would play the saxophone if one only could
I loved your music Dave, I still listen to it. Rest in peace brother.
