British scientists have a way to zap the enzyme with X-rays to “supercharged ability to break down polyethylene terephthalate (PET).” The enzyme doesn’t merely break down plastic water bottles, it reverts them back to original form, so the material can be reused to make more plastic bottles. This gives the enzyme a commercial use beyond disposing to actual recycling back into original use. More

Don’t say “polyethylene terephthalate” with a mouthful of crakers…
I had a plastic eating enzyme once. Dumped her when I got the bill.
Liberal environmentalists are gonna croak. A possible solution or at least aid to a pollution problem that doesn’t involve them being able to blame or demand others to live as they decide they should?
Totally unacceptable, and no doubt racist on some level.
Hey, lets zap everything with radiation x-rays (including our DNA) and see how everything turns out in 3 or 4 generations from now.
Plastic is inert. It can do no harm to you if ingested. A true fact.
@Different Tim: So you zapped the enzyme with “ex-” rays?
😉
Huh? All that’s needed is to clean and grind the PET bottles, these have been recycled for decades without being “digested”.
Uh oh – ice-nine.
Doug…I just spit Beer through My Nose!
Good News: Eats plastic.
Bad News: Shits plutonium.
Fuckin’ details maaaan…

@TheMule: You just reminded me of an old extremely unacceptable joke from the early 70’s:
A Presidential aide rushes breathlessly into the Oval Office:
“Mr. President! Mr. President! There’s good news and bad news!”
“O.K., give me the bad news first.”
“Sir, the aliens have landed!”
“DAMN! Ok, what’s the good news?”
“They eat ni***rs and piss gasoline!”
😉
Hope they keep those buggers on a short leash!
Nice,
Because it is not the plastic island that is the damaging thing, Its the killing off of small fish and other greebs who eat plastic and cannot throw it up and they die, killing off things that live on them.
The worst offender is the elastic on Yoga pants, which breaks up into really, really small pieces. Its all over the oceans now
I call this enzyme the real deal in recycling
I’ve eaten British food. This should help.
