A buck thirty is not even something we consider sporting when we are shooting chucks with our ARs. A chuck looking at us is smaller than a man’s head. We used to shoot 223 out to ~450 or so, roughly a quarter mile. Then shot our 22-250s and 243s out to 750. Since laser range finders came affordable, we go 600 with our ARs. We are shooting in coulees in swirling winds.
Where I park my camper I put a 12 inch steel gas line block off plate 900 yards away and poke at it with our rifles getting about 20% hits with our varmint rifles. That is ~a half mile for those of you in Rio Linda. When we shoot at it with our 300 Wbys the hit/miss ratio goes way up.
Where I’m going with this is there shouldn’t have been unsecured high ground within a half mile minimum of this place.
The varmint rifles are more accurate, it’s the wind that limits them. There are some very slick 30 cal bullets that is the reason the 300 wby does better.
If the shooter was worth a shit he could have closed the deal using a TC Contender Super 14 pistol in 223 or 30-30 and closed the deal with a firearm that could be concealed by a guy in shorts and a T-shirt.
