Social Ethics of War, Then and Now

The Bull Elephant

Last week we reviewed some aspects of how the Politics of War have changed in our country. In this article we’ll briefly examine how some important moral and ethical factors connected with war have changed over the past century.

The Disappearance of Evil.

As American culture has become less religious, the notion of evil has receded into the misty past. Indeed, what we once called evil has become almost normalized. Behaviors which formerly gave evildoers long terms in prison or even cost them their lives, under the law’s judgments, are now either minimally punished or called “alternate lifestyles.”

Today, unregenerate sexual predators live among us, serially victimizing children. If caught and convicted, they go to prison, serve part or all of their sentences, and then are released back into society. Communities try to learn who they are, but are often blocked by authorities concerned for criminals’ “privacy.” States and localities pass laws to identify habitual child-predators, but some courts overturn the statutes. Perpetrators of repeated perversions are no longer called “deviants.”

Occasionally, a crime captures the attention of the media, as in the case of a young woman who disappeared while vacationing in Aruba. The media obsessed for weeks on her kidnapping and probable murder. Certainly, it was a wretched business. Meanwhile, other equally despicable crimes were ignored or aired only briefly. Two homosexual men in Arkansas raped a 13-year-old boy repeatedly. He suffocated when they stuffed underwear in his mouth to stifle his screams. The media all but ignored the incident. The term “evil” did not appear in any news reports I saw.  more here

  1. There should be “leaks” as to the perps identities.
(everything else is “leaked” these days, why not that?)
Then the “citizens committee” can handle the rest.
    The (in)Justice Department isn’t.

  2. Did you put pro “alternate lifestyle”” Bush Republican”‘s Asa’s state in in the last paragraph intentionally? or were you unaware of how woke ‘Asa is? Asa and Sarah both Gov of same state; 2 polar opposites. But both have “R”!
    still can not understand!

  3. ADDENDUM

From 1946 to ’49 I lived 100 yards from a China Marine Cpt. Who was part of the 8.7% that survived “The Bataan Death March”. I was a precocious kid. It was clear to me Cpt – was “not all there”. Then one night at a cocktail party (My folk’s; I was not an attendee (only 5), I just lived there!) Another Cpt said something he should not have with little kids near.
“The Corps keeps _ on only because he lived through “The March”!” He clearly is “Non Compos Mentis””.

I then knew why I felt the way I did about Cpt -.

I swore to myself when I went to Nam to kill Mandarin speakers for JFK I would never be taken alive. Not just “Death before Dishonor” But death before brutal, mental destruction. I kept my word! Did kill some Mandarin speakers; not taken alive.

Learned this from a Mandarin POW

    Wo ja be jo

ChiCom for “Give me a beer” Drank lots of beer years ago.

Manhattans, Rob Roys and Old Fashions now.

Had 4 relatives that killed japs. Japs were bad! Over 91% of Bataan Death March were killed! Sons of whores!

Ladies, please pardon my French but sometimes bad words are the only words that are apropos!
BTW NYT said many times 1943 to 1945 my kin killed Japs because “white supremacy!”! Pearl Harbor – and the Death March – never happened !!

China marines were 4th Marine Regiment. Ich bin ein “Tuefel Hundt”. 5th marine; and very proud! Can’t help it; its in the blood!
