“The Love Boat” Won’t Be Making Any More Runs

The sad end of the MS Aurora is a familiar story in the Delta’s marshy sloughs. Boats of all kinds routinely get dumped here like so much trash. Battered by time and weather, they seep oil and other hazards, infuriating local officials and jeopardizing wildlife and the tens of millions of people who rely on Delta water for drinking and agriculture.

But the Aurora is no ordinary boat. She was a German liner, then a cruise ship plying the Grecian isles and the West Coast of North America, then an unsanctioned floating homeless shelter and drug den, turning up as a vessel non grata in several of California’s big cities. And, of course, she was a Hollywood star. She appeared in the James Bond movie “From Russia With Love,” and was part of the real-life inspiration for the TV show “The Love Boat.More

  1. The Catalina Island ‘Great White Steamer’ had a similar sad ending. I rode it with my family to Avalon on Catalina Island (off of Los Angeles) in early 70s, before it was retired. It moved around, at one point was moored less than a mile from my home off of Pacific Palisades/Malibu. It ended up in port of Ensenada… where it sank because it was in very poor condition.

  2. I’m on the Delta A LOT. Not so much in the last couple years but I plan on getting back this spring. My fav water. It’s arguably the best large mouth fishery on the planet. A huge expanse of water. And Gavin Newsom’s doing his best to kill it. Stealing all that NorCal water to ship down to Libtard ville. That’s why they’ll never allow the state to be split in two. Water.

  4. Sidebar: Stockton is a shithole. Drove through there many times from the early 70’s thru the 20-teens. Couldn’t get out of that town fast enough. Last stretch of I-5 to be completed, prior to which you had to drive thru town on surface streets. What a nightmare.
