Maybe you heard of this, maybe you haven’t, it doesn’t matter. It’s a cool little mystery that’s been solved.
If music had a Comic-Con, this would be the geek’s Holy Grail.
1979 a song appeared on the Billboard chart in position 102 – with a bullet- for a month. It was called “Ready N’ Steady” by a band called D.A.
But there wasn’t a living soul that could be found that had ever heard the song. The record label, Rascal Records, had the song catalogued as #102. It was odd that the chart position was 102 and the catalogue number was #102, fueling conspiracy theorists.
Another problem was that Rascal Records headquarters was an abandoned house in Detroit. And there didn’t seem to be any songs #1, #101, or any number in between. Rascal Records was a ghost, as was the band D.A. and their song.
It became a burning mystery for years, and it was finally determined the entire thing was a hoax and everyone was resigned to the sad reality that the song never existed.
Until now…
Behold—
And—
Here’s the story behind the song.

after listening to it …. I wish it never existed 🙂
I’m glad the mystery is solved but I don’t think my 1979 experience was lessened in any way by not hearing it then.
No Buddy Guy, no John Mayer, no Hendrix, and no Joplin, but fun anyway.
“Well, isn’t that special?”

without the internet, i’da never known of this mystery nor of its resolution, and it was all resolved withing a minute.
No wonder DJs never played it.
I’m ready
I’m steady
Are you ready for me?
C’mon baby and turn the key

Reporting to Nielsen/Soundscan myself, they pretty much take the sales figures I give them without question. Sometimes they question, but not often. It’s more of an honor system arrangement.
I can see how some firm could create an artificial hit.

Like the DNC did?
