The Sound of Silence – IOTW Report

The Sound of Silence

Absolute winner sent in by Moe Tom.

(To be fair, a Sound of Silence that must be eradicated in the police force is the silence of not whistleblowing on a corrupt cop. They exist. They should be ousted. Having said that, this is a powerful video.)

In case anyone asks, the version of this song is by Disturbed. It is fantastic.

  1. I have the deepest sympathy for the wives, husbands, families, and co-workers of those who are killed doing dangerous jobs. This certainly includes peace officers, but it also includes

    – fishers
    – loggers
    – pilots
    – iron and steel workers
    – roofers
    – garbage collectors
    – farmers
    – truck drivers
    – power line workers
    – construction laborers, and
    – taxi drivers and chauffeurs

All of these occupations are more deadly per capita than the job of the law enforcement officer.

Note that I specifically include peace officers, but we should always remember the contributions that everyone involved in the complex economic world we live in are valuable, and some of those occupations are perilous. God Bless them all.

  2. It’s a chilling video, and the person who sang it is fantastic. It’s actually better than Simon and Garfunkle’s version. I have friends whose sons are cops, I’ll pass it on. It’s rather sad.

  3. By the end of the video I found myself wonder what kind of evil hatefulness would be spewed if this was posted to a left site like Huffpo or Raw Story.

I like Disturbed version, a demonstration of an amazing vocal range.

  4. Yes, I have to agree with the assessment of the vocals on this particular song.
Disturbed may stink otherwise, I don’t know, but on this they knock it out of the park.

The singer sings just the root of the song, leaving out Garfunkels harmony, and on paper you’d say that that would be a major deficit

But because what he does is so subtle and so powerful, raising the octave and the timbre with each succeeding verse, we don’t miss it at all.

He is showing amazing control through multiple octaves.
For me, this was a vocal tour de force.

  5. I liked the vocals. Always amazed at those who can hit the cracked-voice upper range and be able to speak again the next day. It was amazing with Springsteen in the mid-80’s concert series. How the hell could he do those consecutive 3-hour concerts in August 1984?
