The Team Nobody Wants to Play – IOTW Report

The Team Nobody Wants to Play

The Archbishop Murphy High School football team in Everett, WA is 6-0 so far this season.  They won their first three games by a combined score of 170-0 and the rest by forfeiture.  The team has six players that weigh over 250 pounds and three players that weigh in at over 300.  Their opponents would rather forfeit than face the prospect of injuring their players.

There are still three games left in their season but the school is concerned that they may not win their state because they haven’t played enough games this season.

  1. I think they are going to move them up a division to face large schools that can match up better.

I can’t blame the kids team members who are getting a superior education at the private Catholic school.

  2. It’s a Catholic school, and these institutions can draw students and players without regard to boundaries. So for high profile programs, which this school apparently has, they are not restricted to school boundaries.

In parts of southern California, the CIF fixed this problem by putting the Catholic schools in their own league. At one point, years ago, the Catholic school league was melded into various public school leagues, but this proved unfair and the Catholic school league was resurrected.

  3. Wyatt, you are correct. This high school has become a “football mill” and probably gives scholarships to talented (and big) players. The fact that they play other small schools (1A) makes it worse. I don’t blame them. My brother played on the offensive line in high school. He was a fairly big guy and once had to play across from a guy that got a scholarship to Notre Dame. He got his clock cleaned on every play.

  4. The program obviously needs to move to a stronger conference.
I feel very bad for the seniors are on the team who aren’t there for a college scholarship. Their last season whimpered out. Too bad.
