Why wouldn’t they be? They had to shorten their name from The Metropolitans to The Mets because the fans couldn’t spell it.

Now….that there is the winner….Cleveland spells Indians as “The Tribe”……

Okay this study is statisticaly meaningless, there are only two Clevland Indian fans; and one of them is an English professor, whose friend, a math professor, got the government grant, to due the study.
FWIW, I switched allegiances from Flushing to The Bronx after I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer patients are particularly susceptible to metastisis, which is commonly called “mets” (as in, “She has mets to the lungs.”). I didn’t want to root for a team that reminded me of a terminal illness.
The late, great Al Siegel, Yankee fan extraordinaire, called this “The oddest reason I’ve ever heard for someone becoming a Yankee fan.”
