Tonight’s Soothiness- Music, When Soft Voices Die

A poem written by Percy Bysshe Shelley and published after his death in 1824 in “Posthumous Poems” is a simple two stanza, four couplet expression of loss and memory. It has been set to music and used as a choral piece by numerous composers.

The Atlanta Master Chorale performed the Eric Nelson (1999) composition in October last year. Watch

Music, When Soft Voices Die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory;
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heap’d for the belovèd’s bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.
