An antique wooden box described as a “vampire slaying kit” is slated to go up for auction in England later this month.
The lot, which is being auctioned off by Hansons Auctioneers in Derbyshire, England, has attracted “major interest on social media,” the auction house said in a statement.
“I know very little of its history,” said the box’s owner, who wished to remain anonymous, in the statement. “I have had it in my own collection for three years now. I bought it from a large antiques fair in Newark. I loved the look of the Gothic box and, when I opened it, I just had to have it. I thought it was so interesting — a great conversation piece.” More

Many years ago I went on a ‘ghost tour’ of the French Quarter in New Orleans. Very entertaining. The origin of vampires, or more generally of the dead rising, was something along the order of this:
Priest comes to the family of a recently-deceased person and says ‘I had a horrible dream that your loved one will rise from the grave to haunt you, for various bad things you had done to him!!!’ The family members reply ‘what can we do???’ to which the priest tells them that a ceremony must be done to appease the dead person’s soul. The priest is happy to perform this ritual at no cost; however, certain items must be obtained which are in fact somewhat expensive. The terrified family members cough up the dough, priest performs the ritual, and… voila! The recently departed does not rise from the grave!!!
