That’s funny, Fur! I used to refer to my aunt’s gated community as “The Kremlin”. I wished she had saved all the missives (of course it was her neighbors’ complaints) issued from The Central Committee:
“You haven’t secured the lid on your garbage can this week….”
“Residents pets (a cat) must not be allowed outside without the supervision of ….”
“The placement of your recylce bin allows it to be seen from the ….”
“Residence are reminded to roll up and stow their garden hoses when not in use.”
And the list goes on from there. Everything from policies regarding Christmas lights, the shapes of shrubbery, etc.

I lived in an HOA community for 14 years. There was a guy up the street who’s house was a disaster, but he never got into trouble with the HOA. I put up gingerbread molding along the top of my porch and the HOA told me to take it down. I refused and appealed, citing a clause in the covenants that allowed me to keep a cosmetic change if all of my surrounding neighbors signed a paper. They all did without issue. I kept the gingerbread.
I won’t mention the race of the guy with the trashed house…

I must live in the most lax HOA community in the country. They allow cars galore to park in the street, landscaping personal I’ve yet to see, it’s a Amazon, FedEx, UPS freeway and the place isn’t a dump, go figure.

I’ve been serving people in HOA communities since the 80s.
Not one positive thing about it.
Absolutely no way I would ever buy a place in one OR buy a zero-lot-line property – same thing, but even if they killed the HOA, zero-lot-line is stupid bad. Currently have a customer who has spent over 20 grand on lawyers because the neighbor refuses access to her own wall to solve a flooding problem. Walls and floors are seriously being damaged over the last two years.
Egos and control issues.
Guaranteed the neighbor is a Dem. That’s how they roll – a-holes.

I was about to send this posting link to the treasurer of my HOA (who is a very nice lady) and our HOA is one of the least intrusive and least expensive on Amelia Island. However, I decided not to try and poke the aligator.. because you never know when mocking someone or their volunteer job if that wont be as funny to them as it was to you. I guess I am learning how to say less and not make trouble even though that kind of benign behavior definitely something new for me.
