Whistle Stop

White housewife who claimed Emmett Till, 14, ‘sexually threatened her’ so her guilty husband would be acquitted of lynching and killing him admits she lied and now feels ‘tender sorrow.’

Till whistled at her, that’s all.

Now, let’s read the opinion of a modern feminist.

Quora.com – As a woman do you see cat calling/wolf whistling as a form of sexual harassment and do you think it should be illegal as feminists think it should?

Sierra Spaulding, University student majoring in Biology, Synesthete, vegan, politically inclined

Yes, it is definitely a form of sexual harassment, and I do believe in certain situations it should be illegal. Although some perceive it to be just innocent compliments, I can assure you- many women feel threatened and intimidated by strange men who are unable to control their sexual interest in a completely unwarranted situation. Compare it to reasons why other “words” constitute making a “terrorist threat”, which IS illegal.

Generally, a terroristic threat “is sufficiently specific where it threatens death or great bodily injury.

The courts have held that “a threat need not take any particular form or be expressed in any particular words, and may be made by innuendo or suggestion, and that the words uttered will not be considered in a vacuum but rather in light of all the circumstances.”

The required mens rea element of the offense is generally “that the accused have made the threat with the intent or purpose of causing fear in the victim or in reckless disregard of the risk of causing such fear.”

Now, note the part of “bodily harm” and reasonable fear. I am sure many are saying I am going much too far with my comparison, yet, a woman who has been raped, or who has a sincere fear that she may be raped- having a complete stranger “accost” you verbally without provocation with any kind of sexual interest is threatening. Women have a reasonable fear that men who cannot control themselves in this way possibly may have issues with controlling themselves from pursuing the matter further and causing them bodily harm with physical sexual assault.

!snip!

By her standards, the backwater Bryants were closer to modern feminism in their thinking than is comfortable. There was no need for the Bryants to embellish their story. Whistling is assault, a “terrorist threat” even.

That doesn’t say much for feminists, does it?

  1. As a man, I’ve never understood why men catcall. I know it’s common in the black community and every time I’ve witnessed it, thought it was tacky. It screams desperation, immaturity and genuine lack of life skills.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t side with feminists in the least. There’s better ways to go about getting a woman’s attention.

  2. One act of egregious act of white on black violence is national lore for over sixty years, household names and all. Any white on black violence turns the black victim into a nationally recognized name. Yet no mention of the current epidemic of black on white violence. Not one act, but epidemic. This will help anyone sort it out; when there is a real epidemic then you won’t be able to even keep up with the list of victims. When you’re still clamoring over one act of violence against your personal demographic over 65 years ago then there is no institutionalized violence targeting you. When a white, 87 year old WW2 Vet gets stomped to death in a race crime, and no one even heard about it then you are the victimized demographic.

  3. @old_oaks: It’s not just in the Black community – go to NYC and watch a good-looking woman walk past a construction project sometime. Anyway, it’s mostly not done for the woman; it’s all about guys trying to impress their fellow males with how much of a horny macho dude they are. And also to see if they can get a reaction (embarassment, anger, etc.) from the target of their attentions. Some people never grow up, you know.

    IMHO, that is.

  4. Whistling is NOT assault.

However, if unwanted by a young lady, it can make a person feel vulnerable, wondering just what might be illiciting the whistle, or cat call. It can make you want to move on quickly, just to get away from the unwanted attention.

I always try to make a man who feels that a whistle should be a complement to a woman, understand how it feels to many of us.

Men: imagine, you’re at a pool (or actually anywhere) and a man whistles at you in the same manner as you “complimentarily whistle’ at a women; how would you feel?

  5. **”it’s all about guys trying to impress their fellow males with how much of a horny macho dude they are”**
Most of my life, I was a blue collar worker laboring at hard, sometimes dangerous work. All the men I worked with were decent, proud people who felt quite secure in their sexuality and never made overt PUBLIC demonstrations toward women.
However, at times, I used to work with exactly that type of guy described in the quote above. The most memorable was so wrapped up in apparently never sated pursuit of sex that he whistled at women and hurled rude spoken epithets frequently, among the other standard rudeness of the type. Most of his conversation involved sex in one way or another with little relation to what the conversation had originally been about. Our nickname for that specific guy was “The Jackoff King” which always pissed him off immensely whenever anyone called him that.

  6. “Yes, it (whistling) is definitely a form of sexual harassment, and I do believe in certain situations it should be illegal”

    Has the world gone mad?

Whistling is crass and immature, and it makes women feel uncomfortable, but no it’s not harassment. To call it such diminishes REAL harassment and victimization of marginalized groups.
