USAtoday: Scientists identified all-time world records for both the longest lightning bolt — nearly 200 miles — and the world’s longest-duration lightning flash — over 7 seconds — according to a report released Thursday.
Both records were certified by the World Meteorological Organization, which is in charge of documenting such things.
The record-long lightning bolt was spotted over Oklahoma on June 20, 2007, and traveled 199.5 miles, about three-quarters the length of the state. That’s almost the distance from New York City to Washington, D.C.
obviously climate change because it says climate not same, wait over 9 years ago and none like it or better, that makes it an anomaly.
Most ham & CB radio guys live in fear of
lightning strikes.I have a 80′ radio tower
in my back yard. When I am home and a thunder
storm is brewing I disconnect my expensive radios
and put them in the closet!
It’s Trump’s fault.
June 20, 2007?
Why is it news now? Were they measuring it with a yardstick?
Ha! Lazlo is an Insurance Adjuster
I am sending this to the asshole client who complained that the Thunderstorm was ‘way over there’ (pointing to the black cloud heading this way) when I told him I wasn’t climbing his roof that day.
I don’t dick around with lightning
Bimbos maybe,
Lightning, never
Now! Hillary can get back to work.
And just how long have they been able to make these measurements? Ten years? Twenty years? This is just stupid. How long were the lightning bolts in the jurassic period? World record my ass!
How do you measure a lightning bolt, exactly? No seriously. I don’t know. How can you measure it with nothing to measure it against?
They must have a way right?
A tape measure and a stopwatch. That’s how.
Why did this take 9 years? Must be a gubment thang.
@muddjuice: You have to detach the lightning bolt where it emanates from the cloud, lay it on the ground, then measure it using a vehicle’s odometer.
So how do you sever the lightning from the cloud?
I thought you’d never ask.
With a bolt cutter, of course.
@Vietvet
Brilliant! I love the snark here…..
So, is the science of measuring lightning similar in reliability as the science of carbon dating…?
Amazing.
One of my favorite all time pointy head liberal moments is when the Weather Channel “expert” was lecturing about lightning safety, explaining that your car is safe because the rubber tires insulate it LOLOLOLOL..
@muddjuice: It’s actually more reliable, because scientists have discovered that carbon atoms are like Hillary – they make up everything.
I seen much bigger than that …
