It’s 1964 Again

Great find by Menderman.

This is a Johnson ad in 1964 (back when ads were very long) that could easily be an ad in 2016. You fill in the appropriate players. (It’s easy to do.)

This is a must see.

Here’s a 2 minute version.

Here’s the long version

  1. I was 11 … my parents had just bought their first color TV … a Curtis Mathes … the guy’s smoking on TV … hadn’t the smoke Nazis taken over, yet? Dude looks familiar.

And yes, the similarities between the ’64 election and the smearing of Goldwater and today’s and the smearing of Trump is nauseating.

I hope we’re more sophisticated now – and understand the power and purpose of propaganda.

  2. That’s a great example. Look at what happened with LBJ getting elected. The fearmongers scared everyone that they could and our country has gone downhill ever since.

  3. Watched the two minute version and it’s a superb political ad for its’ time and will be again because you can bet the Dems will bring it back with a few changes. Gone will be the successful white guy smoking a cigarette and in will be a successful white mother/lawyer but the message will be the same. It may well be an Iowa farmer or some other conservative image but in some form it will be back. By the by, the guy was an actor that I’ve seen in character roles on TV and in the movies and he played his part in this little video drama well. Expect to see the little girl and the nuclear explosion one as well.

  4. The red probably won’t work. My interspersed replies to a comment on the video. Maybe you can figure it out.

I did miss the ‘illegal’ part in #14.

I’ll put my replies in red. He touches on some good points. This was a comment from here: https://www.facebook.com/quartznews/…5331310833903/

“Hans Mulders: Why the Republican Party is all wrong for this country and the world:
    1) No politician is going to be in charge of my daughter’s, wife’s, mother’s, sister’s birth control, including her uterus.

Sure, they or their family pay for it. If she’s under 18, the parents have to be involved.
    2) No politician is going to have a say in when or how I die when I am terminally ill, yet of sound mind.

    Completely agree.
    3) No political party will vilify my friends for being gay.

Agreed, no vilification. No special rights either. Hate Crimes get erased, they are just cimes against people. If someone chooses not to agree with their orientation, that’s OK too.
    4) No political party will call me a “taker” just because I haven’t been as lucky as they have.

Don’t start this. Are you working? Gaining skills if you lack them? Refusing to take a job for a wage because it’s ‘beneath’ you. Do you have a worthless degree and are shocked no one wants to pay you to do worthless things?
    5) No political party will give more tax breaks to the wealthy at the expense of the poor.

The tax code itself is a crime. Mostly agree.
    6) No political party shall deny evolution.

Get over it. It ain’t law and ain’t likely to be. It’s just something you don’t want to hear.
    7) No political party shall deny the urgent matter of climate change when 98% of climate scientists indicate we have a problem.

Phuck you and the politically motivated “climate scientist” you rode in on. Clean air is good, it don’t require massive wealth transfers and job death to accomplish.
    8) No political party shall pretend to reign in government all the while expanding it – see national expenditures under R presidents.

    All Presidents!
    9) No political party shall stand in the way of reasonable consumer protection laws.

Your definition of “reasonable” may be hugely different than mine.
    10) No political party shall stand in the way of allowing Medicaid/Medicare to negotiate with big pharma as to the price of drugs – currently this is against the law, courtesy R.

Doubt one party did that, actually pretty sure of it. But I agree, bend ’em over.
    11) No political party shall stand in the way of breaking up companies that have become too big to fail.

Government don’t get to subsidize private or public companies of any stripe or color whatsoever. Never.
    12) No political party shall do everything in its power to turn America into a Christian nation. We are a nation founded on the idea that all religions were welcome, including those we did not practice and/or understood.

Except Islam. Those motherfuckers are evil and cannot live here and be devout at the same time. So, they cannot live here.
    13) No political party shall change school text books so their version of historical events is thought in school.

Agreed. You Liberals really need to stop that shit.
    14) No political party shall demonize Illegal immigrants who have come here by and large to better their lives.

Agreed, no demonization. But no free rides. You come here, you have to be self supporting to the point you can contribute. We have enough home grown couch potatoes as it is.
    15) No political party shall insist on spending more on national defense than the next ten countries spend combined.

Both parties are guilty and perhaps you should study up on how profitable war is and who gets the money. I’ll give you a clue. It’s the people that finance successful political campaigns.
