DETROIT—Now that’s a whopper—a very old whopper!
A 240-pound sturgeon that could be more than 100 years old was caught last week in the Detroit River by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The “real life river monster” was nearly 7 feet long, the agency said Friday on Facebook, where the photo was shared more than 24,000 times by late afternoon.
“Based on its girth and size, it is assumed to be a female and that she has been roaming our waters over 100 years. She was quickly released back into the river” after being weighed and measured, the Fish and Wildlife Service said. more
SNIP:
Why is that guy wearing a mask? lol
So how many elections has he voted in?
Doesn’t look a day over 90 !
It should run for president.
That’s probably the most excitement that fish has experienced in…well…100 years!
quickly released after weighed and measured
That would imply no time wasted to throw on a mask and lay next to it for a photoshoot.
and whatever else we did that doesn’t include weighing and measuring without telling you
Because the Sturgeon General ordered him to.
Bottom feeder, been around for a hundred years…sounds like they hooked a Senator.
Obviously the above photo is not the Sturgeon of the story. There is no way sunlight can penetrate the water of the Detroit river.
Great. Now the fish has the COVID. That sturgeon is going to need a surgeon.
My mother would talk about seeing these fish while scuba diving in the Saint Clair river. “Yea ok mom” Then I met one while diving for fishing lures amongst the old piles from the grand trunk rail road. Very impressive.
We can top that here in Oregon. Herman the Sturgeon.

A Detroit property contaminated with uranium and other dangerous chemicals collapsed into the Detroit River on Nov. 26
60,000 tons of dangerous radioactive waste sits on Great Lakes shores.
Bet the sturgeon glows in the dark.
Search St Clair river sturgeon. My area is a favorite area for Sturgeon breeding. Theres a lot of good You Tube video of them. Impressive creatures. I had a similar experience as Huron snorkeling as a youth. Unfortunately I was unaware of the beasts at that time and came very close to walking (running) on water. Scared the crap out of me as the fish was bigger than I was.
That one is just a pup! I’ve seen fish and game reports and pic of 10-12 footers in the Snake, Columbia and Sacramento rivers. There is a picture that has been posted on the internet for years of a part of a sturgeon washed ashore that may have had a run in with a large Sperm Whale that they guestimated it to be more than a ton and in the 20 foot range.
Tonight they be eatin’ good in da ‘hood.
That one is tiny. Come to the Snake River in WA/ID and catch a 500 pounder. Had a buddy in the Army Reserve who was a diver with the Corps of Engineers. He’d dive behind the Snake and Columbia river damns to inspect. Saw sturgeon big enough to scare the sh*t out of him. Weren’t 240 pounders.
I nursed him up when he was a baby Sturgeon.
Not really nursed him, hand fed him.
