4,000 flights cancelled over Memorial Day weekend due to bad weather and ‘air traffic control actions’

Daily Mail UK

early 4,000 flights have been cancelled over Memorial Day Weekend, with airlines citing bad weather conditions and ‘air traffic control actions,’ as passengers continue to pay top-dollar for airfare.

Americans are paying more than $400 for domestic flights, a 24 percent price increase from before the COVID-19 pandemic, yet airlines cannot meet the surging travel demands.

In addition to soaring ticket prices, which Fox News reported are 45 percent higher than this time last year, passengers are finding their travel plans disrupted by route cancellations and significant delays.

More than 1,500 flights were cancelled worldwide on Saturday, which followed over 2,300 cancellations on Friday. Global passengers also saw more than 14,400 and 17,500 delayed flights on Saturday and Friday, respectively.

The trend appears to be continuing into Sunday, with over 900 cancellations and nearly 5,000 delays worldwide, as of 9am EST, according to tracking service Flight Aware.

The Federal Aviation Association says staffing issues and traffic volumes are causing many of the nation’s largest airports to experience ground stops and delays, limiting takeoffs and landings.

In response, airlines have begun to scrap certain routes and reduce summer flight plans, as well as cut back on training requirements in an effort to get more pilots in the skies as quickly as possible. more

  1. “Cutting back training requirements” for new pilots is SUCH a great idea! As if I needed another reason not set foot on another plane.

This should worry everyone – but they keep these stories from the public. I saw a different interview from this pilot, I feel sad for him because he was coerced into that jab, and he’s living the nightmare, and no recourse, his career is over.

  3. 24%??? My flight this weekend cost 3x the same flight for late February. Perhaps I bought this ticket a little later, but I paid under $200 for the February flight and over $600 for this weekend.

  4. Why are their staffing problems at FAA? What has changed? Were employees let go because they are unvax’d? I want to know why they have staffing problems. When has there ever been delays due to staffing problems at the FAA? ATC strick in the 80’s? This just seems very odd.

  5. My neighbor is a pilot/trainer. The FAA requested that he fly full time now due to shortage of qualified pilots. Combine that with the shortage of fuel and air travel is becoming a real mess. It all comes down to NO leadership.

  6. In North Texas, the winds and weather have been shit for months. Perhaps 1 day in 10 is a pleasant day to fly. The remainder are 20 kt crosswinds or 30 kt gusts or 1,000 ft ceilings or thunderstorms. Shit practically every damn day.

  7. When they say “as well as cut back on training requirements” they mean reduce the flight hours required to qualify for an ATR. It’s currently at 1500 and they want to make it 750. This actually makes sense. I’ll be happy to discuss why if anyone wants the explanation.

    Disclaimer: I am an ATR
rated pilot with 6500+ hours of flying.

  8. I just got back from Ohio. Our flight crew was an hour and a half late-but they did show up! Reason stated was that they needed to be off duty X amount of time via FAA regulations.

Our plane had sat at its gate overnight yet they never found time to load it with meals. So no food or ice. All that was available was hot tea, coffee or water with Biscoff cookies or pretzels (not both). The captain said he tried to buy food in the CMH airport for the flight-but none of the restaurants would do it. And, a lot of the “restaurants” are now fancy vending machine kiosks.

Got back and forth safe. Didn’t wear a mask. Each way (Sea/CMH) there were just a handful of maskers and they were 20 something’s or boomer college professor types.

  9. If I never have to take another flight, that’d be fine with me. In fact, it’s gonna have to be a pretty damn good reason why I need to get on that airplane because I read crap like this combined “diversity” hires, I’ll drive.

  10. We flew to Las Vegas out of Sacto last Sunday. Our flight was delayed 1 hour but was on time coming back. I figured if TSHTF, I could always rent a car and drive home. I’d be screwed if I flew to Hawaii.
