The “Starbucks Two” Settle With Philadelphia For a Symbolic 1 Dollar Each

I had no idea the two guys arrested for bringing their own bottle water into Starbucks, sitting at a table and then asking to use the bathroom, only to be arrested for loitering, were in negotiations.

What was Philadelphia negotiating bout? They did nothing wrong.

Neither did Starbucks. They can throw anyone out of any business for any reason. Just ask the bar in NY that threw the guy out for wearing a MAGA hat.

The arrest of Rashon Nelson and Robinson on April 12 touched off a furor around the U.S. over racial profiling. They were led away in handcuffs and accused of trespassing after the manager called police, saying the men refused to buy anything or leave. After spending hours in jail, they were released and no charges were filed.

How was this about race?

Their arrest record will be expunged as part of the deal.

The men said they were waiting at the coffee shop in the city’s well-to-do Rittenhouse Square neighborhood for a business meeting with a third man about a potential real estate opportunity.

Has anyone gotten any specifics about this supposed deal? And how did the deal go?

“I am pleased to have resolved the potential claims against the city in this productive manner,” Mayor Jim Kenney said. “This was an incident that evoked a lot of pain in our city and put us under a national spotlight for unwanted reasons.”

The entrepreneur program will be for Philadelphia public high school students.

Nelson said he considers the incident a case of being at “the wrong place at the right time because of the outcome that can come out of it.”

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross, who is black, at first defended his officers’ conduct, but days later issued a televised apology for the way the Starbucks call was handled.

How was the call handled badly? A place of business wanted loiterers thrown out. The police were called, they came, they removed the loiterers.

Is the new normal going to be that people can just hang out in restaurants, drinking their own beverages, using the business’s bathroom and the business won’t be able to do a thing about it?

Of course it will be. That’s the plan!

This is the left using minorities (because everyone is afraid of them, why I do not know) in order to damage private ownership, because a damaged private business is one step closer to government controlled businesses.

  1. All they had to do was buy a stinking cup of coffee, or a bagel.
That’s what I tend to do when I want to meet someone at a restaurant.
It’s the decent thing to do.
    But no.
Gotta raise a national stink about nothing legitimate.

  2. I have run into many restaurant bathrooms with an urgent need, and since I didn’t need food or drink left without buying anything. I didn’t make a mess, and I make it up with purchases at other times. But I am always prepared to buy something if asked, and I certainly wouldn’t push back to the extent of having them feel a need to call the police!
Oh, it’s because I’m not black. Right.

  4. My nine year old daughter and I were taking a trip to Montana last month during her Spring Break. Not one time did we stop at a service station or other business to use the restroom that there was any question whether we would be purchasing something from that establishment. Not only is it wrong to expect others to provide you with restroom, meeting facilities, or anything else it is also an undignified life to have been brought up to expect to sponge off others.

  5. What a preposterous settlement. The City should have at least paid them enough to buy something at Starbucks next time – $1 ain’t gonna purchase nothing there. I was thinking a $5 Starbucks gift card.

  6. Should have been charged with vagrancy and trespassing. Probably they were afraid of the adjective “unarmed” being tossed into the mix. Ferguson is everywhere, just ask Hank the Georgia congressman.

  7. A dreadful precedent, set by those pussies that run Philly. Paying out a settlement, no matter how small, imply’s guilt or wrong doing on the part of the city, which opens the door (and wallet) to anyone that wants to shake down the city for actions that were totally lawful and correct.

The two back guys went into this looking for a payout, and boy did they get one, a free college education paid for by Starbuck’s.

The fired manager will also get a huge payday. White liberal guilt, the gift that keeps on giving.

  8. This was a matter of “the two” not having any awareness of store policy or civic etiquette (that if you’re utilizing space within a business, it’s just proper to purchase even a small item) and miscommunication between them and management. In their response and the forthcoming “sensitivity training,” Starbucks chose to affirm a false reality: the “Spectre of Systemic Racism in America.” Starbucks is empowering the worst among us – those who cry “Race” whenever they perceive disrespect, or simply want to “get over” on others they don’t like.

  9. Ted, why do you assume these 2 were just the victims of circumstances? I submit that they knew exactly what they were doing, namely perpetrating a shake down of Starbucks. They had ample opportunity to either leave or buy something.
Even when the cops arrived they could have either left or bought something. No, this was premeditated and orchestrated for a specific outcome. They got their payday.

The delicious part in all this is that the sanctimonious virtue signalling prog CEO got accused of the very sin he rails against. If he had an ounce of honesty or respect, he would open up his stomach and be done with it.

  10. A couple of bus tickets to San Francisco as their settlement would have been fair. Then they could have shit in the street and wouldn’t have had to get permission from the racist employees at Starcucks to use the bathroom.
