uhhh, do a Bing image search with “sports fans with paper bags on head” and you will see that this has been a sports tradition for decades. It’s a symbol of shame for having performed badly.
Being a Mets fan has given me intimate knowledge of the tradition. The team mascot should be a guy with a bag over his head.
