Abigail Adams has a new take on the Jukebox. It’s along the lines of Steven Crowder’s “change my mind, ” but in reverse.
AA writes-
“I’m so right-brained I am completely lost when it comes to guest’s jukebox selections. I only know that I like certain songs, but don’t know why.
Can the musically inclined tell us why we like a certain song?”
Abigail’s pick:
Gerry Rafferty “Get it Right Next Time”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?
Why does she like this? Why should anyone like this?
Does it suck? Is it good?
Sorry AA, it sucks. I need a big shot of vitamin B after listening to that. I’m rolling with Q.
https://youtu.be/UhyFaXgTHIA
Let’s get it on.
Good foot tappin tune. Sax player is excellent, and piano mixes well.
I guess I never had an ear for the lyrics in a song. About the only song I can understand all the words to is Happy Birthday. Once other noises are introduced I can’t hardly make out the words. I couldn’t tell you what those guys at Dink are saying if my kids life depended on it. Catchy beat though.
This is pleasant background music, but I don’t much like background music; when I listen to music I like to focus on the music. That’s my personal preference, though, and not meant as a slam of the song or musicians (the recording engineer made some odd choices, though).
Joe, to think they let you play with power tools.
joe6pak
Got I’ll my biz neighbors hooked on Q. That’s no shit. Rarely have a chance to keep up as well as they, because I actually work for a living. That song has been booming through out the biz park since Q posted it.
Lyrics, no wonder you dig it,
Man, oh, man
My hands in the plans
Fan of the man
Sands in the plans
I’m at home
On my own
Gone and flown
A home’s a home
Ren the Hoak
And other folk
Soaked and soaked
By their joke
Hey, hey, Joe, Joe
Whatcha know, whatcha know?
Hey, hey, Joe, Joe
Whatcha know, whatcha know?
Push and push
The level of the tone
A bone’s a bone
A moan’s a moan
What’s next, what’s next?
Who knows not those?
Bear it wear it
Live it or die it
Hearts that bleed
Hearts that need
Need and need
Bleed and bleed
Toke and toke
The smokin’ toke
Smokin’ Joe, he know
Smokin’ Joe, he know
Hit after hit
My fuck’s not fit
To sit and sit
And follow that shit
On my own
My brain’s my home
I’m alone you’re alone
I’m alone we’re alone
Push and push
The level of the tone
A bone’s a bone
A moan’s a moan
What’s next,…
Uh, you guys must have missed the part where I asked: “Can the musically inclined tell us why we like a certain song?”
Where are all you music nerds who like to talk dirty about music?
This is no idle musing. I’d like to know what makes this (to me) a great piece of music. Or am I like Lucy who doesn’t recognize “Jingle Bells” unless it’s played with two fingers on a toy piano?
Thank you, Uncle Al.
No hook, it’s gotta have a hook
I’m with Joe. I never really listen to lyrics. I think it’s secondary to the totality of a song.
I once took a songwriting class and on the first day I was horrified to learn that “songwriting” was more like a poetry class.
It had nothing to do with music and everything to do with lyrics.
Lyrics are not music, sorry.
Yes, they can make a song even better when they are good, but good melodies can have ordinary lyrics.
No matter how brilliant your lyrics are, if the music sucks the song sucks.
HELLFIRE AND SANDY APPLESAUCE!!!!
You people lay off Abby. Gerry Raferty is coo. The song kicks ass.
Dear Abigail, the reason you like this song is that it’s in G Major. Chicks dig G Major. You know, like how D Minor is the saddest key…
The only lyrics I hear are “You’ll get it right next time.” Otherwise it’s something about a kind of mash-up of various musical styles that keeps me listening. Kinda quirky.
AA, tone deaf, couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. Once drove a violin instructor to attempted suicide. But I kind of like this.
https://youtu.be/BB2Ad04mukI
You people have me contemplate huffing carb cleaner. The lyrics are hard to understand?
“Out on the street, I was talking to a man
He said, there’s so much of this life of mine that I don’t understand
You shouldn’t worry, I said, that ain’t no crime
‘Cause if you get it wrong, you’ll get it right next time, next time
You need direction, yeah, you need a name
When you’re standing in the crossroads every highway looks the same
After a while, you can recognize the signs
So if you get it wrong you’ll get it right next time, next time
Life is a liar, yeah, life is a cheat
It’ll lead you on and pull the ground from underneath your feet
No use complaining, don’t you worry, don’t you whine
‘Cause if you get it wrong, you’ll get it right next time, next time
You got to grow, you got to learn by your mistakes
You got to die a little every day just to try to stay awake
When you believe there’s no mountain you can climb
And if you get it wrong, you’ll get it right next time, next time
Next time, hmm”
Have we sunk so low as a culture that the smooth ramblings of Gerry Raferty sound foreign?
GOD HELP US ALL.
Aaron, take your fucking pill and eat a snickers bar. LOL
Gerry Raferty?
Brad, burn in eternal molten haggis. The damn nerve of you posting ANYTHING here after hitting us with Scottish lyrics… SCOTTISH LYRICS!?!?!
Get the fudge out of here you pipe blowin’, cross dressin’, caber tosser.
It’s Gerry Rafferty, man. Dude never sang in Scottish…. and he was Scottish.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU6w56epBdc
Thanks, Aaron B. See??? Aaron B. knows music.
It is a cool song.
Maybe Trump will change musical tastes while he’s MAGA-ing.
Hold my hand, Abbey. Brad’s being mean again.
Aaron
Ur killing me. I just UPS’d you a snickers bar. Just look at yourself in a mirror. Are you happy with that? I’m here to help. Unless there’s humor at your expense, but Allah knows, you are my first or second concern. Jeez. LOL
Aaron B — G Major, huh? Hmm. Interesting. All chics like it? Why?
“Aaron B — G Major, huh? Hmm. Interesting. All chics like it? Why?”
Because G is the first letter in Geritol.
I’m touching myself while looking in a mirror….
The point is, Abby graced us with her musical choice and everyone lifted their legs and peed on it. Honestly, we need to figure out who’s gonna’ drunk post and all take turns. When everybody does it, it gets ugly.
Soooo…. that brings us back to Betty Hutton and a tall glass of whole milk. Enjoy!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7uugJey3Ho
Aaron — Brad doesn’t know how to be mean. He’s a big softy and the best friend of everyone on this blog. Except Loco. Sorry Loco.
You know he likes you when he insults you.
I’ll bet Geoff’s on my side. LOL.
Why do skirts like G Major? I dunno’ man, lots of em’ seem to really enjoy Downton Abby too..
I like Brad.
Just blindsided me with…. Scotland.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ECGKcl4s-k
Ah, I got to admit it, I like Loco too. We ain’t swapping spit you understand, but I do respect the little bastid. Bottom line, he is a patriot and I can’t hate any patriot.
I’m confused, is AA Abigail Adams? I’ll respond in a comment to her as AA, but do you call yourself that?
“The point is, Abby graced us with her musical choice and everyone lifted their legs and peed on it”
Oh my gawd, give him enough rope and sure enough. I’d send my condolences to your wife EXCEPT, that sounds like something I would say. Good night.
Joe shorthand. AA
I hope she doesn’t hold it against us, it wasn’t my intent.
Aaron — that clip….it was ‘orrible!!
What is your Scotland story?
Hey, that’s really weird. I like Downtown Abby — Except everything after season 1.
Joe — No, I’m just getting tired of typing out the whole name. I detest being called “Abby.”
I’LL SQUASH YOU LIKE A BLOATED ……damn… da’fuq else do Scottish people “do” besides haggis?
Anywhay, the hell else do you want from me? I posted a Betty Hutton video. We should be riding off into the sunset together.
What is my Scotland “story”?
Ancestors burned their hovels and used them for target practice.
“I posted a Betty Hutton video”
Liar. LOL. I think you meant to post this one. A three legged critter running about. Ah, to be young again.
https://youtu.be/ydLHY0qonl4
BB — Geoff declined comment. Good man. Smart man…sometimes.
I’m off to another Jordan Peterson lecture. Tonight’s is on why an all meat diet is a terrible, terrible thing.
joe6pak
AA’s a Patriot. I won’t speak for her but I’d be surprised if she took any offense. Her and Geoff are top notch. Now that’s an old expression. But accurate.
Christ you’re an ugly drunk. The hell I didn’t post a Betty Hutton vid. scroll up.
Hang on….. I have a headache now…. need more tequila…..
“I’m off to another Jordan Peterson lecture. Tonight’s is on why an all meat diet is a terrible, terrible thing.”
I think we could both argue that point AA. Been knee deep in that crap most my life on both sides. my conclusion, eat like a caveman. If it kills me early, so be it, but, I feel much better when I eat like a caveman, or Keto. Same thing.
Sorry guys, I’m with Abigail. I really liked the song. For me it would be a mood choice…like when I want to get myself rolling on a physical project. Good tempo for that. The various instruments come through both individually and combined.
“Christ you’re an ugly drunk.”
LOL, obviously you haven’t drank me pretty yet. So why is this my fault. To funny. Why ya jacking on the Scotts for Christ sake?
Now, see? PJ actually took this dang thing seriously. Thank you, PJ. Very much.
It’s Friday night (again), and where are all the cool kids hangin’? IOTWReport.com, of course.
BB — I’m like the kid who reads through the whole library catalog. That just happens to be the next lecture in the J. Peterson lineup. No particular agreement with what he says about it. I could never give up meat. Maybe just not eat it exclusively. Be interesting to hear what he says, though. I always learn something new from him.
Brad, I was just confused on whether Abigail Adams and AA were the same person or not. I like the heck out of both of them. I bet the only thing AA is mad about is where this thread went.
“Sorry guys, I’m with Abigail. I really liked the song. For me it would be a mood choice”
Dang it you womenz, the mood is fight to the finish. How we gonna do that feeling like we just smoked a joint? We should all be listening to this.
https://youtu.be/2LHgQ4-5sZI
But after that 30 seconds is over, it’s time to fight. LOL
You attacked with Scottish lyrics. That’s…. I can’t be the only one…. but that’s a clear declaration of WAH!
It’s Scotland…. you know, crazy redheaded penny pinching bastards, stubborn as fook and ugly as sin? I just reacted the way any civilized person would when confronted with the Scottish menace.
I drank a shot and posted a Betty Hutton vid.
OK, now I gotta ask, is PJ, Plain Jane?
joe6pak
Yes PJ is the most awesome Plain Jane.
You guys wanna’ segue into 10cc? this one’s in F Major. The heart ache key.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdCY0CgMoq8
🙂 Hee, hee,hee.
PJ
Love you darlen.
Joe — I’m not mad!! Damn it!!
I just thought we might get all those music honchos who try impress each other with their musical nuance-ing, and I could figure out why I find particular music to be “good” and then maybe I could figure out what they mean with all that music-speak they use. And we might all benefit a little from it. I listen to Mr. P. and Mike N. go on and on and on (and on) about their music and most of the time I don’t know what they’re talking about. Same thing, here. There are threads about music that I just skip over because I don’t have a clue. LOL
“Joe — I’m not mad!”
Oh shit Joe, this is not good. LOL
Aaron — The heartache key? I bet it wouldn’t sound so mournful if you put the lyrics to Camptown Races to it.
Better: Baker Street
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU6w56epBdc
…
Ya’ like music because you like music. There’s no why to it. I like music. I just happen to like a huge variety of it. I play musical instruments. It’s a part of my life. Not everyone is into music that way. It’s no big deal. Some people are into painting. Bores the fudge out of me.
I was teasing with the G Major explanation.
Although chicks do indeed like it….
The point is, people like music for all kinds of reasons. Mood is a big one. It’s all just for fun and enjoyment.
P.S. I posted Baker Street already…. ah forget about it. I’m gonna’ blow this place up with Japanese pop vids tomorrow.
I’m not sure what key this is in, but the melody’s nice.
This is something I can listen to…very occasionally.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Gze0PxDKgQ
BB — You *are* on a toot! LOL
And now it’s 11:00 and I’m missing Peterson’s lecture, too! I gotta get up tomorrow and try to get out from under all the projects that got stacked up because of this stupid tooth business that took two of my days this week!
Good Night, All!!
Kind of like, I don’t get mad, I get even.
I was going to abbreviate my name but decided against it.
Frig, I knew sooner or later this would swing to Baker Street. Very sad memories for me. Tragic.
Aaron — yeah, I get your point and I agree with it. But I was thinking more along the lines of music appreciation. You know, like when you see a gallery exhibition and you can like certain paintings and not others — until someone who knows what the artist was trying to do tells you what to look for. Then suddenly you can “see” something there that you didn’t appreciate or apprehend before. It just makes it more enjoyable. I’m just now beginning to appreciate, for example, all the little background things about certain iconography that I hadn’t noticed or thought were random. Same for music, I think. If I can better understand what it is that I’m hearing and why I like it (or don’t like it), how much more I can appreciate the art of it.
“I was going to abbreviate my name but decided against it.”
JP, and PJ. I’m totally digging it. Aaron will have issues, which he will explain soon. But I like it. From now on, I’m BB.
Understandable lyrics, with a positive even if generic message, catchy tune. What’s not to like?
I love music of all kinds, everything from Fiona Apple to Frank Zappa. It makes me feel good.
Bluegrass, Blues, Rock & Roll, the many forms of Jazz, even Grunge… all great unique types of music created right here in America by passionate, talented people. Music envied and sought after by the world and once had to be smuggled into communist countries.
“Music is the best”
Frank Zappa
Well Abby, music appreciation is subjective for the most part. There are indeed though, certain keys that are more pleasant to listen to than others.
In ancient Greece the government had the authority, and used it, to ban certain “modes” of music. It would be like the government today banning death metal or rap because it riles people up.
Classical music affects the brain positively, Mozart being the best example. Play classical for hyper kids. Calms em’ right the fudge down.
So if I had to guess, you like soothing modalities and major keys. 4/4 rhythms and a slowish tempo.
Abby, what I’m saying is you like that song because you’re white.
Love you back BB and I love the darlin thing. I once mentioned here that no one ever called me darling, and one of our regulars obliged me. Nice. It must be that most of the men in my life are of German ancestry. 🙂
Lower shift road music…tum..dee dum..dee dum…da tum…dee dum…dee dum
Surely *not* their haircuts (comes through on the treble).
Well I like it and I know why. My foot’s tapping and my ears are smiling.
Lyrics are secondary and messages take a back seat to lyrics.
(remember… there’s a bathroom on the right)
Other than that this was pretty advanced stuff for 70’s music coming outta the whole leisure suits & disco balls thing. It actually has an 80’s flavor to it.
All in all I give it an 79 on the Dick Clark Rate-A-Record scale. (Bandstand was still going then)
Gotta good beat, easy to dance to, but a little repetitive.
Needs more cow bell.
Actually, the song seems to be a typical 70s AM radio 2 minute format piece. Not bad, not really memorable; vanilla, which is fine if that’s your taste. I won’t put it on a mixer tape / CD.
I have a couple of Gerry Rafferty’s songs on my Spotify playlist. I’m not a huge fan, but his mellow style is a nice change of pace in between the hard rock songs I usually listen to.
This one would be good for heavy, bumper-to-bumper, beltway rush hour traffic.
There was a secret chord that David played that pleased the Lord. It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall the major lift.
Leonard Cohen Sung by a lot of people. I like Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley best.
Once upon a time was a backbeat
Once upon a time all the chords came to life
And the angels had guitars even before they had wings
If you hold onto a chorus you can get through the night
Jim Steinman, sung by Meat Loaf. 🙂

Damn Scots.
OK Brad. I’ll see your bagpipes and raise with Samisen.*

* Japanese banjo played with a paint scraper.
I heard a radio interview with Rick Wright after the release of “The Division Bell” and someone had mentioned that some song was his favorite. The interviewer asked him why it was his favorite, to which he replied, “I guess because I like it the best.”
It seems like a kinda snarky answer until you think about the simple fact that most people don’t know (or can’t express) why they prefer one thing over another.
Some people like Beethoven, some like Snoop-doggy-dog. That’s just the way it is. Some believe in “His Holy Modal Majesty.”
izlamo delenda est …
@ Abigail
You are most welcome.
AA- I got here late. This thread is probably dead but I’ll take a shot at your question.
See, the thing is, music affects everyone differently. For instance I like classical (baroque), chamber music, blues, bluegrass, hard rock, metal and psychedelic.
I have little use for jazz, disco, elevator music etc.
I want to hear a solid riff under a strong, catchy melody, some clean solos and a few interesting variations, maybe some tempo or chord changes. I appreciate some “space” in the mix, and a decent vocalist helps too.
A well-produced song should also include meaningful lyrics and some unique elements to separate it from typical air fare. Done right, it will resonate emotionally, and will approach poetry (in other words, Art.)
Some people don’t respond to complex or sophisticated music and are satisfied with simple tunes or ditties. Others want music to kick them emotionally. There is something out there for everybody.
I’ll leave you with this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKyBt6b2IUU
(Pay attention to the construction of the instrumental break starting at about 2:45.)
looking at the name of that song, i did not think i knew it- but i do. definitely heard it in the day. it is very of it’s time and i am Gen X so it did not appeal to me. a lot of music that particularly touches us often has to with the time and circumstances under which we heard it or associate it with. music’s power is in its’ emotional pull. lately i have been going through a bit of a 90’s grunge phase. songs i did not run out and buy, did not particularly like at the time have become very evocative of that time in my life. it’s the emotional triggers- and that varies of course from individual to individual. when this song came out- i liked it but it was too ez listening for my then rather industrial rage feelings. now it really gets to me because of the memories and emotions it brings forth. https://youtu.be/FHsip5xOenQ
I like both kinds of music- Country AND Western.
