I’m not sure what your point is here. I always took the song as a representation of what working class Joes think of people like rock stars and show biz in general. So, yeah, they’d call them “faggots,” i.e. not real men like us working class guys. This is the resentment of people living somewhere between poverty and the middle class level against people who seem to enjoy lives of luxury, if not decadence and degeneracy, in return for virtually nothing at all (“money for nothing and your chicks for free”).
So, I mean, what’re you gassin’ about, dude?
yep, heard it when it came out in 85. MTV played it just like that. and we played it just like that. thing is if you didn’t play it like that you didn’t get called back to play anything ever again.
also, that version is banned in… wait for it…
Canada
it’s a requirement in my car though as i drive through canada
While I have not heard it in a while, that verse was included when it was popular. They over played it, got damn tired of the song.
PK, I believe the point is censorship. Your assessment of the song is also spot on.
I have heard the full version on radio, though not lately (I’m not really a fan of what passes for “classic rock”). I also recall that the “original” music video featured a clip which bore a striking similarity to a certain skin bleaching (alleged) pedophile pop icon. The video was quickly edited to depict a more generic white pop singer.
Of course, my memory may only reflect my personal image of “that little faggot with the earring and the make-up.”

kinda reminds me of the filmseries ‘BumFights’ or was that ‘Celebrity Deathmatch’ either way it was gr8!
I doubt it’s PC-censorship; more likely culling an 8-1/2 minute tune down to 4 minutes for market consumption. They did the same to the Beatles’ “Hey Jude” on initial release.
Sure i recall that verse. Was even featured in the vid
The lyric was in it at the time, sho nuff.
“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
— George Orwell, 1984
Made me go to my achieves, CD and Cassette. Yep, it’s there. MTV and FM played the S*it out of this. Always found The Sultans of Swing was the gem and Mark Knopfler is a monster guitarist.
Count me among those who remember hearing the whole song, faggot and all.
I heard the full version on the radio all the time years ago.
I’m liking classical music, plus jazz and blues, 1940’s stuff more and more…. ….Lady in Red
Oh, that ain’t woikin’. That’s the way you do it.
I sure do miss the 80s. Big hair, no PC, classic clothing, lot’s of money. Being young (and everything that accrues to that). What’s not to love?
Yes I know that verse. I do own the CD, but I’ve never noticed it being cut from the song when it was on the radio.
Here’s one on Youtube and that verse is edited out!

though I think I do remember it
I always thought they meant Jagger
Yeah, I don’t recall NOT hearing that line in the song, though more often than not I’m hearing it on CD and not radio.
Not sure, but the “faggot with the earing and the makeup” was
a reference to Sting, who sang on this song.
Hendrix, too had a faggot reference on his “Astro Man” song.
I listen to satellite radio Deep Tacks, and have never noticed any censorship on these particular songs.
Now, if you want to see real censorship in action, go somewhere and download the entire lyrics to that commie Woody Guthery’s “This Land Is Your Land”.
Remember when we were kids and the teachers taught us to sing this?
Yeah, I remember that “faggot” verse was played on the radio all the time. The part of the song that should have been cut is when the insipid Sting sings “I want my, I want my, I want my MTV”. Could have done without his out of tune falsetto shitting on the network and fans who were making him rich.
Great song.
Knopfler was (is?) a guitar/singer/songwriting genius.
“Brothers in Arms” still moves me.
izlamo delenda est …
Absolutely, Tim. Great song. You ever listen to any Notting Hillbillies?
Faggot has clearly been hear-able every time I’ve heard the song.
Kind of stands out.
Censored versions must be a new thing and I haven’t them yet, but it’s not like I’m listening to 70’s rock much.

Thirdtwin,
Can’t say that I have.
Will look them up, though.
Thanks.
Not Dire Straits best effort IMHO, but certainly their most commercial one.
“I’m liking classical music, plus jazz and blues, 1940’s stuff more and more…. ….Lady in Red”
You must love that old standard,
“We’re killing our babies
My b*tches and me…”
Probably a spiritual in your book.
Its out there on satellite radio on rock stations but not on terrestrial like Zac Brown’s toes in the water ass on the sand.
Yep.. very clearly remember it and remember also that no gave a shit either cause the queers were quietly concentrating their efforts on subverting Hollywood and the public education system at the time. They became far more visible and voicerous after they used the 80s and 90s laying the groundwork.
I remember listening to that song on my Sony Walkman and those are the lyrics I know. Probably have that cassette somewhere around here.
I believe I saw an interview years ago with Mark, and he said he was in a department store and overheard a conversation with some appliance delivery guys, and they were watching Prince on MTV at the Television display, and came up with the song based on what he witnessed.
I always thought it was a reference to Elton John.
BFH – I had to start the video from the beginning, the only way I could fully appreciate it.
I looked at my Brothers In Arms album and the song length is 8 min 25 sec but on the Sultans of Swing The Very Best of DS the song is 4 min 9 sec.

I am the entertainer
I come to do my show
You’ve heard my latest record
It’s been on the radio
Ah, it took me years to write it
They were the best years of my life
It was a beautiful song
But it ran too long
If you’re gonna have a hit
You gotta make it fit
So they cut it down to 3:05

BIG Knopfler fan here so this goes to artistic use of music and all out censorship. Either play the song, on radio, in original form or NOT. That’s what happened, heard it a while back and noticed it.
Heard it again recently and it( censorship) was confirmed.
@ The Plutonium Kid – Like others that commented after you, go look to see that music should not be censored but turned OFF if you either don’t like the melody OR the lyrics. I believe you missed the premise.
@ the Good General – NOT. Culling? Are YOU serious?

I have no use for censors or political correctness or historical revisionism.
MK one of the BEST guitarists out there and uses NO pick. The Straits had one of the best debut albums of ALL rock time…and any other time for that matter @ Lady! Give them a try.
Thanks BFH.

That was a classic early rock vid never mind the censorship.
Thanks BFH.
WOW…just tried to post something and, I guess, I mentioned the wrong word or posted the wrong link. Went to post and got WIPED…NOT GOOD.
So I will post the two vids I wanted to originally and keep it simple, for the Knopfler fans.
