Whether it is legally permissible to use lethal force in self defense when the weapon used in an assault is not lethal is problematic. As far as I’m concerned whether it is morally/ethically permissible to use lethal force in a case like this is pretty clear: yes it is. But a nasty prosecutor could give such a case aggressive attention, sad to say.
It’s time to use this kind of laser against the rioters. A prosecutor would have a hard time winning a case where the weapon used in self defense is the same as the one used in the aggravated assault. You don’t have to be in close contact to act in self defense.

In discussion of social contract theory, “inalienable rights” were said to be those rights that could not be surrendered by citizens to the sovereign. Such rights were thought to be natural rights, independent of positive law.
The government has absolutely no authority to sanction intentionally blinding another innocent person, ergo no government has legitimate authority to enact a law restricting anyone being so threatened from taking ANY action necessary to terminate such a threat.
That doesn’t mean they would not try and usurp that authority.
The police should be snatching cell phones and smashing them on the concrete.
Arrested protester can go to jail or boot camp, like the old days.
