Dick’s blame shrink for poor performance.
Dick’s Sporting Goods posted weak second-quarter numbers on Tuesday—and it placed a large share of the blame on shoplifters. The retailer missed Wall Street forecasts as it reported a 23% plunge in profits for the quarter, reports CNBC, and shares in the company were down nearly 25% at midday as a result. The company blamed “shrink,” an industry term that encompasses theft as well as goods gone missing for internal reasons, such as accounting errors, per CNN. “Our profitability was short of our expectations due in large part to the impact of elevated inventory shrink, an increasingly serious issue impacting many retailers,” said CEO Lauren Hobart said in a statement.
Hobart, however, made clear she was primarily blaming “organized retail crime and theft in general” when referring to shrink. The Wall Street Journal reports that Macy’s also reported weaker-than-expected earnings, and its chief executive similarly cited theft as a contributing factor. Jeff Gennette said the retailer is taking steps to curb the problem, including removing what the Journal calls “high-theft” items from store entrances.
I haven’t been back in one of those stores since they gutted their once well stocked guns and ammo section.
Maybe it’s good they don’t have guns anymore so the looters they let ransack the stores can’t steal them.

We didn’t have much of a problem with shrinkage when I was working retail.
Might have had something to do with it being the ’80s, Sears hired actual off-duty cops for security, and they VIGOROUSLY prosecuted ANYONE stealing, be it customer or employee.
“shrinkage” is a retail term for inventory lost by whatever means.

Dick’s shrinkage was caused by consumers throwing cold water on sales.
According to people who are clearly racist, the democrat party granting tacit permission for one specific racial demographic to steal up to $900 per day from any store on any day with zero consequences could present a possible downside to the retail economy.

Similar store Dunham’s has huge merch area staffed by one employee for entire store so not a surprise these places will be gone soon
