Audits, Arrests Surge As Feds Crack Down On Employers Who Hire Illegals

Daily Caller: Immigration authorities under President Donald Trump haven’t just cracked down on illegal immigrants, they’ve also stepped up worksite enforcement against the businesses who hire them.

Employer audits and investigations into workplace immigration violations have surged in fiscal year 2018, leading to criminal and civil arrests that far exceed the number recorded in the previous year, according to statistics released Monday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

There were 2,282 employer audits — known as I-9 audits — opened between Oct. 1 and May 4, according to the ICE data. That was about a 60 percent increase from the 1,360 audits opened between October 2016 and September 2017. Total worksite investigations also spiked in the same period: ICE’s criminal investigators have opened 3,510 worksite investigations so far this fiscal year, compared to 1,716 for all of fiscal year 2017.

“Our worksite enforcement strategy continues to focus on the criminal prosecution of employers who knowingly break the law, and the use of I-9 audits and civil fines to encourage compliance with the law,” Derek N. Benner, the acting executive associate director for ICE’s criminal investigation division, said in a statement.

ICE’s “enforcement investigators help combat worker exploitation, illegal wages, child labor and other illegal practices,” he added.

  1. Yes. The best way to deport illegals is to take away their income source. As employers see more and more of this happening, with companies taking a financial blow for hiring illegals, they will take steps to self-enforce to avoid penalties.

  2. Bad_Brad, I once walked into a Jack in the Box that had “We use E-VERIFY” stickers on the door and saw employees that could not have been verified and neither could its customers, for that matter. lol

  3. Just have the ICE vans cruise by every Home Depot at 6:45 every morning.
    And every check cashing-payday loan/ habla Espanol joint at 6-7 PM every Friday.

    Problem solved.

    I know. The Government, State or Fed, particularly California never enforced it. I remember back in 1998 we were freaken out as employers how the manage E Verify. We called the state and the Feds. “We’ll get back to you”. They didn’t.

  6. Just post a $1,000 tax free reward to any US citizen who turns in an Illegal.
    No limit on how many rewards you can earn. Turn in 100 illegals, collect $100,000.

    Coworkers, HR managers, neighbors, landlords, Walmart cashiers, Food Stamp counselors, will all turn Bounty Hunter in a New Yawk minute.

  7. I just applied for a job this morning and had to sign that I understood they were going to use e-Verify. That made me happy.

  8. Can we please use E-Verify in our elections?

    If you are not a citizen, you should not be voting (actually you should be facing a firing squad IMO).
