I’m really glad you brought this up. Because it’s a fallacy. A little background, I was a tournament Bass Fisherman in Norcal for over 15 years. So I payed close attention to why the fuck all our reservoirs were dry. Currently, there are radio spots encouraging NorCal Residents to water their lawns early in the morning to conserve water. The unspoken part, “So we can send it all south”. Fuck that. The project Trump is referring to was called the twin tunnels project. Right through the California Delta. It would have been like a giant toilet flushing leaving the north totally with out water. Newsom was actually in favor of this and got stopped by a law suite brought by NorCal Black Bass Association. You have no idea how many times I’ve traveled over the Grape Vine in the middle of summer, while our reservoirs are bone dry to see all those reservoirs full to the brim. Fuck these people. Nor Cal does not have enough water to support SoCal. Especially during drought years. 8 of the last ten years they’ve told us not to water are lawns. Let them die. While all the movie stars lawns are green as hell. Fuck that. The only answer to this problem is to do what they’ve been talking about for thirty years. Pony up and build some damn water desalinization plants. A lot of them. Because in case their dumb asses haven’t noticed, the Colorado river system ain’t doing so well either. I’m speaking the truth here.
My bad – some buddies and I had a big ol’ Delta smelt fry a few years ago and we may have eaten them all. They’re pretty small, and it takes a lot of them for one medium sized fish sandwich.
I hear you can get delta smelt ceviche in any Mexican cantina. Just say, “Que se jodan los Norteños” and there’s no charge.

It’s probably the longest-running dispute among and between and within western states: water and water rights. Politicians should never try to “solve” disputes that require knowledge of the subject. Why? Because pols have constituents and constituents always want stuff for free or at a wholesale. And, more importantly, public works are the lowest hanging kickback opportunity there is. All that planning money and all that initial construction money is long lost before a backhoe is dropped off at the construction site, where it sits and rusts-out or is stripped of all its salable parts until a huge levy or tax is grafted onto some other bill in the state house.
The Smelt were probably scooped up by air tankers and dropped on the fires.

@Brad: California’s water problem is definitely not a joke, and my facecious comment was directed to the inability to locate any Delta smelt. However, over the past few years I have read fairly extensively about California’s water woes, and it’s not a pretty read.
I happen to agree that desalizination plants are necessary. However, I believe at least one project that was derailed by environmentalists who were worried about marine life being sucked into the plants. I would think that this would be a solvable problem, but my experience with environmental activists is that they frequehtly try to block all sorts of projects without offering any solutions.
The water issue can be complicated, but I do agree that taking all of NorCal’s water for SoCal is not the answer. Likewise, taking the lion’s share of the Colorado river for SoCal is also not a solution, although SoCal has historically taken more than it’s negotiated share.
In a lot of areas like Orange County, Coachella Valley and parts of the Central Valley, water comes from acquifers. However, some of the stuff I read is that the acquifers are not being fully replenished even during wet years, and some of the ground in the Central Valley is actually sinking. Water engineers in Orange County have instituted some pretty unique methods to try to replenish acquifers, including building berms in the Santa Ana riverbed to slow the water flow during the rainy season and allow more water to reach the acquifers.
Riparian rights and issues have been an issue in the west for decades. However, it is difficult to get the public to even acknowledge the problem, much less do anything about it.
