  1. Black bears are generally timid (unless of course they are mamas with babies nearby). I’m not in black bear territory often, but I have run off a couple that were near our campground, trying to get into the dumpster. So this guy probably sees them a lot and his back yard and decided to have some fun. This is not Timothy Treadwell-level risk.

  2. ^ Have seen black bear families fit right in country neighborhoods (low density) and coexist with people just like deer. They’re pretty bright and if their pups grow up being mostly accepted by people, they won’t ever threaten anyone. As kids we used to wave and say “Hi” to a momma and her cubs year after year. She knew we weren’t a threat to her babies.

  3. Living in bear country isn’t so bad, unless you have a problem with locking your garbage up like it’s Ft. Knox.
    Some friends lived on the mountain on the other side of GSNP, and repairs on their garbage cage were constant.
