Rowling generated significant backlash last year when she tweeted that “sex is real,” a noted rebuke of transgender ideology from a popular public figure.

Emma Watson, who played the witch Hermione Granger in the film series, wrote on Twitter yesterday that “trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are.”
She inadvertently nailed the issue. You can’t take what people say about themselves as gospel. People are capable of giving themselves descriptions that are far from reality. It would be like Rock Hudson claiming to be straight or Stalin claiming to be a nice person.
This willingness to accept what people say instead of looking at a person’s record, physical characteristics, and past activities is common in the academic world; it is called qualitative analysis. It is not scientific in the least.
The people who believe personal descriptions will readily believe a 3 year old boy who says he thinks he is really a girl. He could also say he’s a dinosaur or a fish, which everyone would claim is childish imagination at work. But if the kid claims he’s a girl the psychologists, psychiatrists, and various academics will call it prima facie evidence that he is indeed a female.
This is nightmarish.
