  1. This is actually employed in video and audio compression techniques. Although audio is not really compressed, it is bit rate reduced, meaning that audio components are removed and not restored based on algorithms that assume the human ear will not miss them as established by subjective modeling.
    Similar things happen in the video world as well. While video compression does “restore” some of the information removed at the coding/transmit end of things, it does take some liberties with information it doesn’t think people will notice. Bit rate reduction has been refined to unbelievably low rates, particularly with the new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) which represents a quantum leap in bit rate reduction without perception of lost information.
