Is Congress Serious About Tax Reform?

DailySignal: House Speaker Paul Ryan doubled down earlier this month on getting tax reform done by the end of the year.

He said he hopes to put a tax bill on President Donald Trump’s desk by “deer season”—Nov. 18 for those who aren’t familiar.

But if the recent House vote to extend and expand tax credits for nuclear energy is any indication, Republicans might not be as serious about getting tax reform done this year as they say.

Ryan’s ambitious timeline for reform could be achievable, as the House GOP tax blueprint is a good foundation for updating the tax code.

In his first major speech on tax reform, he rightly called out one of the most important components of reform.

“Real tax reform means slashing our corporate tax rate as low as possible,” Ryan said. “This means eliminating special-interest carve-outs and replacing them with lower tax rates for all businesses.”

This has been the rallying cry of tax reformers for decades. The tax system needs to be simplified by, among other things, eliminating the long list of current tax preferences.

Such reforms can help partially lower the tax rate for all businesses and stop Congress’ destructive habit of using the tax code to pick winners and losers in the private market.

But talking about eliminating special tax preferences is one thing. Actually doing it takes a different level of commitment.  more here

  1. Congress is all about taking care of Congress, corporate contributors and self preservation.
Cutting waste and fraud, healthcare repeal, tax reform, the people’s business….not so much.

  2. Ryan loves flapping his gums and talking all grandiose in front of the cameras. As soon as he is off camera, its “Okay I threw a bone to the base that should shut em up for a week or two. Now it’s off to my DC cocktail party and I certainly can’t ruffle any feathers there with silly talks of tax cuts and health care reform”

  3. Paul Ryan keeps a herd of deer in that Janesville compound of his? Who knew? I suppose he calls his pool a “cement pond,” too.

    Pathetic pandering plainly purveyed.

  4. Congress can’t wean itself from corruption.
The Republicrats can’t forgo the ObolaCare taxes because of their greed – hence, we’re still saddled with this abomination.
The Demonrats foundational ideology (ie – Socialism) will not allow them to even entertain the passing thought of assisting America by reforming our oppressive tax code.

We, the People of the United States, must demand it.
    And keep on demanding it.
And rid ourselves (from public office) of the opponents of reform.
Until we re-take our sovereignty, we will remain slaves – for there is no middle ground – either you serve those who govern, or the government serves you.
