Let’s Have a Conversation With The Other Side

You can learn a lot exchanging comments with liberals.  I did this past weekend when Jim Gaffigan posted a YouTube video asking the coastal progressives to actually try to have a conversation with a Trump supporter.

Watch Here

As you can imagine that generated all kinds of responses from the left (and right) on how impossible it is to talk rationally to the other side.  I put out an offer to have an exchange of ideas. Someone calling herself “cereal killer” rose to the challenge and posted this-

I sincerely want to know why Donald Trump made it a focul (sic)point of his campaign from the day he announced, to foment and exploit the many divisions amongst Americans? Groups he has specifically targeted: Muslims, illegal immigrants from Mexico directly … I really want to be open minded here.

She wasn’t sincere or wanting to be “open minded.” She thought she had put me in an indefensible position.

Here are five things I learned in exchanging comments with a liberal:

1.) Don’t get angry when they accuse you of taking them out of context or assuming something about them they haven’t said.  It only means you’ve made your point and they have nothing, no counter-argument.

2.) If you haven’t read Gary Byrne’s “Crisis of Character” yet, you should.  The story of the WH towels with lipstick and semen on them and the agonizing dilemma the WH steward had with what to do with Bill’s soiled linens is a powerful rhetorical weapon to use on those with only an emotional basis for their decision making.

3.) Planting the image of Bill Clinton “dicking bimbos in the Lincoln bedroom” when Hillary is elected is a haunting image to leave them with.

4.) Those voting for Hillary are pessimists, believing that while things are going to hell under Obama, Hillary’s status quo presidential run is better than taking a risk on Trump.  Those voting for Trump are the true optimists, hoping he’ll do half the things he’s talked about and knowing at least he’s not a crook.

5.) Don’t let them argue the candidates are equally bad and don’t let them believe some alternative is taking the high road, it isn’t.  There are only two people with a shot at being president, either a person is going to let the Dems elect Hillary or one will cast his or her vote for the only one who can keep the Clinton criminal syndicate out of the oval office.

  1. I’ve had those conversations too. My experience has generally been them throwing Trump accusations around and waving away anything I say without interest as if it were certainly false. Very rarely, but it has happened, I have had honest, deep discussions where I was challenged but my input was appreciated.

  2. Like Grandpa used to say, you can’t argue with a mud fence. Their minds are closed, their votes are precasted, and they don’t care what the inconvenient truths are, because they ALREADY know they have nothing to fall back on or to argue. The first words they say are “prove it” and then when you do, they wave it away as being a lie. Mud Fence, every time! I think we know how the Germans reacted to the inconvenient truths about the Nazis and Hitler…”Don’t bring them no bad news!”

  3. Clint Eastwood made a movie that perfectly depicts the corruption of politics and the lengths to which they protect each other. ABSOLUTE POWER is absolutely chilling. And still doesn’t expose the depths of depravity of DC.

  4. The last liberal I talked politics with (it was thrust upon me, I didn’t ask for it) Held his head like it was totally crazy anything was wrong with Hillary. I told him she belongs in prison. He knew nothing about her crimes. I must be listening to some dark corner of the internet.

There is no arguing with dyed-in-the-wool dogma. A yellow dog will be elected before anything without a D in front of it is.

Afterwards, I realized I wish I had asked him to do one thing. I will ask any lib that wishes to argue with me this now and I think it would be good the more of us that do this – ‘Please check out the CPUSA web site – Communist Party USA – and tell me what you disagree with on what they want for America. Also, tell me if you’d vote for the candidate they want for president’.

And leave it at that. They are supremely unaware they are Communists at this point.

If they come back and decide to embrace it and declare they are – then it’s easy to argue with them as an enemy of the country. Maybe there is a possibility they wake up. Not betting on it. They are masters at lying and even deceiving themselves.

Only good Red is a dead Red.

  5. @Anonymous actually I did use illegals coming over the border as part of my first response. I took each aggrieved group she referred to and stated clearly what Trump’s position actually was.

Here it is if you want to read it.

In my opinion we have a “failure to communicate.” While the statements made haven’t changed and can be verified in print, the message actually heard by us the listeners varies considerably. Let’s break it down.

Trump declares he will build a wall and why he wants it built. When he states who the wall is suppose to keep out I (and those who agree with him) hear that it is meant to keep violent criminals, drug runners and yes those who have not properly gone through the immigration process (and are breaking the law) from freely entering the country. You hear all Mexicans and assume he and those who agree with him are racist.

Trump says he wants to TEMPERARILY restrict entry of people from Muslim nations where terrorism is rampant until “we figure out what the hell is going on.” To me that sounds like the right if not the duty of the Chief Executive to secure our citizens against those who desire to come here and commit acts of violence in the name of Allah – you know like what happened in Paris and San Bernardino and Orlando and New York and New Jersey. You hear Trump wants to ban ALL Muslims and believe he and his supporters are racist.

Trump goes into Detroit and other impoverished black communities and tells them that their local government has failed them purposes maybe they should try something new, like not voting Democrat as they have in some cities for 50 years. He also calls for law and order in these communities so that the residents have a chance to pursue their dreams and their livelihood without the threat of violence by the 5-10% of criminals that commit the majority of major crimes. You hear the messaging of BLM and our current president and the DOJ and even the Democrat candidate for president and believe that the problem in these neighborhoods is a racist police force that is killing and harassing honest law abiding citizens and therefore believe Trump is a racist demagogue applying to his racist white base.

Part of the difficult is how the statements made by the candidate is filtered by your favored news source that skews the message to draw the worst conclusions. Take a chance and try getting your news from other sources, I can suggest a number of outlet on line.

The best she could offer back in response is to get angry that I assumed she supported BLM and to tell me all about living in a red state and having to read Conservative content as part of a debate assignment (or something). Then she tried to get me again me to defend Donald’s rhetoric.

I countered stating that he’s crass and not a polished politician then hit her with the towel story and Bill and his bimbo’s in the Lincoln bedroom. Funny how her next post sounded like she wasn’t going to vote for either. That’s when I responded with my last point and asked her to convince me to vote for Hillary – no response back, but I got to work on my comments and came up with the 5 points above.

  6. There are no conversations anymore.
    There is only
Logical, reason based argument (when you can get a sentence in uninterrupted).
And vituperative monologue and dismissal of the second party as either crazy, intentionally malevolent, or too stupid and willfully ignorant to grasp the enormity of the issue.

  7. “In my opinion we have a “failure to communicate.”

Nah, I had a short live conversation with a runt lib at the Gym the other day and I brought up how Hillary would destroy the constitution and he jumper right on the Second Amendment, Gun Violence, yada yada yada. So I asked him as he stood in front of me if he thought I needed a gun to kill him. End of conversation. Our ability to communicate was doing just fine.

  8. I think I’ll take the advice of the Brexiter, given earlier: simply tell the killery supporters that their turnout is so overwhelming that they probably won’t even need to vote.

  9. Where are you guys running into Liberals that actually want to have a logical conversation? That certainly is not my experience, admittedly limited as it is with Libs. Everyone I’ve ever run into wants to go on the offensive immediately.

  10. I do not dare even hint or otherwise reveal my political leanings in the workplace here in the heart of the entertainment community in Los Angeles. I have absolutely no doubt I would lose my job if Trump is victorious. The good news, I will never be promoted even if he loses and my position is known.

Yes folks, it is that bad. Watch this video and you’ll understand:
    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2016/10/17/_youtuber_test_car_with_trump_stickers_looted_destroyed_by_black_youth.html

  11. I have had a policy for about 40 years of not really speaking to liberals. Instead, I ask them questions – lots and lots of questions about their beliefs and positions. Typically, most liberals get frustrated, refer to me as a racist and call it a day.

I have found progressives, more than conservatives, to be rigidly dogmatic – even to the point of ridiculousness. True progressives believe that diversity must be observed even if forced on people – liberals will vote for a candidate based on skin color or gender without even knowing their stance on issues. I have questioned women liberals about Hillary, and have found that many of these people have no idea of what Hillary stands for or what she has done; the fact that she is a woman is enough although Clinton can be as greedy, maniacal, corrupt and power hungry as any white male who has ever run for office.

This is actually an entertaining way to engage liberals, because so few of them can justify their beliefs. Furthermore, their “solutions” to perceived problems are just regurgitations of vague remedial actions – usually involving “re-educating” some group or another. You know when the questioning is at an end when you are called a racist and the liberal walks away.

  12. The Gunny. That video should go viral. Notice they can’t keep their pants up? Fucking hilarious, but scary. Remember one or more of these assholes will get shot one day and I pray not by a police officer. One of their own will do just fine. Why ruin the life of a cop?

  13. Quick story. My neighbor is a federal superior court judge (put on the bench by clinton) that I have known for over 25 years, her and her husband were over at our house for a Christmas party, the conversation turned to the second amendment and she told me flat out that if she could she would take away every gun from every person, even hunters in America.
When I told her I would be one of the first to come to her aid if they were in trouble, her reply “don’t worry I have the federal Marshalls to proctect me.”
The point is this is how most liberals think in Seattle and trying to talk to them is like talking to your untrained dog.

  14. I only have a high school education and there is no way I could argue effectively so I don’t.
That’s why I read this web site. BFH does a great job of explaining his logical reasoning behind why he thinks the way he thinks. I can’t do that. His rants are the best.

  15. JS some of the dumbest people I know have a string of letters after their name.

Just stick to the facts, don’t let them distract from the central topic and when they start calling you names or attacking how you’ve laid out your argument you’ll know all they’re running on is arrogance and condescension.

A talk like that isn’t meant to change their mind, there is a very small chance to do so. It’s to not let them get away with lazy spoon fed talking points and for those observing who are making up their own minds and who can think for themselves.

  16. “When you argue with a liberal the casual observer can’t distinguish which of the two is the real asshole.”

You CAN argue with a liberal without looking like an asshole.

That’s why you stay calm and smile while you exchange ideas. Well, at least state them. I doubt they’d be received in an “exchanged” way.

Let the lib go off the handle and lose his/her cool.

Not getting flustered is the cherry on top. You’re calm and sure of your point. You don’t need to try intimidation with anger. Smile! Show them how silly their idea is.

The casual observer sees the difference.

Too many people think “arguing” means an emotionally filled physical threat. When it’s just two opposing ideas that make an argument.

Keep it to the ideas. Let them twist and shout. You can win on that alone because, deep down, everyone really knows a shouting angry person isn’t really arguing anymore, but trying to force their way on the other. They are “wrong” for that alone in the casual observer’s eyes.

I love it when they get passionate. They hate me afterwards and I’m so happy. Smile your way through the next encounter and speak the undeniable truth.

  17. @ JS

Absorbing Fur’s lessons is good schoolin’.

No one can pour it in your head, but you do have to work the “muscle” which means try anyway. Do your home work. Know your material. Basics. Truly – your competition is not knowledgeable. They’re libs! Smack ’em around with a club of truth.
