Oregon Poised To Force Health Insurers To Cover Trans Genital Surgeries for Children—or Risk Losing Their Licenses

WFB: Oregon officials are set to require health insurers, both public and private, to cover procedures like sex-change surgeries and cross-sex hormones for all ages. Those that fail to do so risk losing their state licenses.

The proposed rule from Oregon’s Department of Consumer and Business Services relies on the latest standards of care developed by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), which called transgender genital surgeries and other procedures “medically necessary” to justify expanding insurance coverage.

The policy change stems from a 2023 law that made Oregon one of several so-called trans sanctuaries, guaranteeing that minors could receive puberty blockers and chemical or surgical sex changes. The rule, set to take effect next year, dictates “what insurance companies are required to cover and how they provide that coverage,” according to Department of Consumer and Business Services spokesman Mark Peterson. more here

  1. Well one of two things will happen. Either Oregon health care is going through the roof cost wise or Oregon will lose most of it’s carriers. I hope it’s the latter.

  2. Many insurance companies are backing away from insuring vehicles and homes in some areas (SEE Florida).

Don’t see why they can’t do the same regarding prohibitive costs in places like Oregon.

Adios MF’ers You’re providing them with a way to save money and please their actuaries.

  3. Wait, I thought it didn’t matter what your genitalia was–it was all about how you “identified” that determined your sex/gender. If that is true, then how can transgender surgery be anything OTHER than elective and/or cosmetic and not medically necessary?

  4. If you don’t support getting government 100% OUT of the insurance business, then YOU are part of this bigger problem. If you can’t purchase coverage for JUST WHAT YOU WANT, then there is ZERO FREEDOM. Everyone complains about the high cost of medical care, insurance, etc while at the same time want government to FORCE all insurance companies to cover THEIR specific demands. You INSURE against the unexpected, NOT AGAINST THE PREDICTABLE.

  5. Anyone calling themselves a progressive these days is someone who deserves every bad and evil thing that could possible befall them to happen, because they clearly want to live in a world like that.

  6. I can see the healthcare insurers either going broke trying to please Nanny State, or saying, “F**k this, I’m out’ta here!”
Either way, it leaves the serfs (not citizens) of Oregon without healthcare insurance.
Are the serfs’ pockets deep enough to pay for everything themselves, “out of pocket”?
