PGA Tour suspends 17 golfers who opted to play in Saudi-funded LIV Golf Tournament

Just The News: The PGA tour announced Thursday that it will suspend 17 players who’ve gone to the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf league.

“We have followed the Tournament Regulations from start to finish in responding to those players who have decided to turn their backs on the PGA Tour by willfully violating a regulation,” tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement.

Prior to the announcement of the ban, the Professional Golfers Association Tour had made it abundantly clear that its players would not be granted permission to participate in the LIV tournament and had denied release waivers to the players, which conflicts with the PGA’s RBC Canadian Open.

“These players have made their choice for their own financial-based reasons. But they can’t demand the same PGA TOUR membership benefits, considerations, opportunities and platform as you,” Monahan also wrote. “That expectation disrespects you, our fans and our partners.” more

  1. A 19th Century type of “Gentlemen’s Agreement” should bring all sides together to the table and establish peace between the belligerent parties.

Now Gentlemen, we must avoid bloodshed over this little misunderstanding.

I wonder if the PGA leadership is made up of ex-congresscritters who leave no stone unturned in running (or is it ruining?) people’s lives?

  2. I like playing golf and I like watching golf. I don’t care for the PGA and I’m not endorsing these guys playing for the Saudis. I saw an interview of a few of those golfers today, the question posed to them was, “if Putin was to have a golf tournament and the money was right, would you play in it?” Those golfers were not at all comfortable with the question. They did some squirming.

  3. I don’t understand how you can hope the Saudis do well by overspending to buy a Euro/American game. These guys throw gays off of rooftops, hold public mass executions, force wimmin to wear potato sacks and beat them if they don’t comply. Well, at least they are giving the PGA some competition.

  4. “If Vladimir Putin had a tournament, would you play that?”. That’s a gotcha question.

I would answer that by saying lots of people from many countries go to both Russia and Saudi Arabia for various reasons, e.g., business, vacations, diplomacy, research, probably more.

Business types are there to buy or sell. Vacationers spend money. Diplomats do whatever they are supposed to do.

The question is out of line. Singling out pro golfers like that is a cheap journalistic trick. It was done to try to make the journo look tough by trapping the two golfers into making a questionable answer.
