Ruth Bader Ginsburg says Constitution makes abolishing Electoral College ‘largely a dream’

fox-

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said this week that efforts to scrap the Electoral College are “more theoretical than real,” according to a report.

“It’s largely a dream because our Constitution is … hard to amend,” Ginsburg said while speaking at the University of Chicago on Monday, The Chicago Sun-Times reported. “I know that from experience.”

The 86-year-old justice has previously expressed support for moving to a popular vote.

“There are some things I would like to change. One is the Electoral College,” Ginsburg said in 2017, according to The Hill. “But that would require a constitutional amendment, and amending our Constitution is powerfully hard to do.”

The Electoral College has come under increased scrutiny by Democrats since President Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in the Electoral College vote in 2016 after losing in the popular vote. Former President George W. Bush also defeated former Vice President Al Gore in 2000 via the Electoral College after losing the popular vote.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has called the system a “scam,” and a majority of Democratic presidential candidates are open to eliminating it, The Washington Times reported.

  1. The biggest problem with the popular vote is that there is no way to verify if it is limited only to legitimate voters and the count is accurate.

FWIW, the dead, illegals, ghosts, etc. are not currently considered legitimate voters by most people.

  2. Getting rid of anything and everything that stops
them from grabbing absolute power is the supreme
    goal of the Left.
When they lost what they believed to be a sure thing
in 2016 they went crazy. Many have stayed that way
and some of them like fascist Antifa have gone violent.
If they lose in 2020 I expect their hate and aggression
    to become dangerous and widespread.

  3. The electoral college protects the interest of people in lower populated states against the power of higher populated states, in particular states with large cities, by a process to equalize their power to elect the president.

But, I wouldn’t trust that the electoral college is safe from elimination in the future, and we might yet fall under the tyranny of voters in Boston, NYC, Chicago, Houston, L.A. and Seattle.

In the past people made the mistake of passing the 17th Amendment. Which had functioned within a state to do what the electoral college does nationwide – prevent large population centers from overriding interest of people in rural areas and small towns.

To sight one example – Does anyone believe people in rural NY want Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand as their US Senators? Before the 17th Amendment, they had the power to get rid of them by voting out their state representative of their district if they did not vote to get ride of a senator that had been in office too long who has a history of giving their interest third rate status priority. But by popular vote they are silenced, overridden by voters in NYC, Buffalo, Albany, etc.

  4. “…our Constitution is … hard to amend,”

…deliberately so, to keep assholes like YOU from using the feelz of the moment to wreck the greatest Nation that ever existed so you can be our lords and masters ruling by diktat and force instead of the consent of the governed…

  5. So she is going to recuse herself from any cases about this issue since what’s left of her mind has spoken?

Personally, I don’t care what Ruth Bader Ginsburg, if that is in fact her real name, says because I don’t believe in ghosts.

Somebody grab a ouija board and call the Exorcist. The Ghost of Buzzie Gunsburg can give Satan pointers on how to make hell less American.

  6. The Wise Latina’s argument in the dissent against the 7-2 asylum ruling was that the government keeps appealing to the Supreme Court more than prior administrations.

It’s like, this is Liberalism. Liberal judges taking unprecedented steps to overrule the Congress, the law and the President. Then complain when he doesn’t lie there and take it.

Or that you have her party going to foreign countries to advising people how to lie about claiming asylum.

This should have been a 9-0 case.

Just like when liberals appeal death penalty cases for 30 years and then have the nerve to say that it costs too much to sentence someone to death.

The thing your complaining about is because of what you’re doing. Like they don’t know.

  7. Think carefully before pushing for a Constitutional Convention. You may think they’d pass amendments to set term limits and mandate a balanced budget, but they could end up abolishing the Electoral College and the 2nd Amendment.
