There were people in the way (I don’t remember who) as Melania was trying to get next to her husband and hold the Bibles for him. Then Roberts, who I don’t think could really see what was happening, began the oath-giving.
If President Trump had started taking the oath and part way through then put his hand on the Bibles, there would be just as much, though different, whining about the glitch¹. I strongly suspect that if Roberts had seen it, he would have waited the few seconds it would have taken for it all to shake out first.
1. I’m using “glitch” deliberately to trivialize what was a very minor mistake.

IIRC, Robert’s had to redo Trumps swearing in, the next day, back in 2017 because he fucked it up then too.
