The Army Just Turned 242. Here’s How Far It Has Come, and Where It Is Going.

Daily Signal: Few American institutions pre-date the founding of our country. Yet on Wednesday, we celebrate the birthday of one of them—the U.S. Army.

Tracing its birth to June 14, 1775, the Army originates from an act passed by the Continental Congress authorizing 10 companies of “expert riflemen” to join state militias gathered outside Boston.

President George Washington’s appointment as the Army’s commander in chief came the following day.

The story of the Army’s 242 years is the story of our nation, punctuated by military operations like the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812, the surrender of the Confederate Army at Appomattox, the successful Battle of Saint-Mihiel in World War I, the D-Day invasion, the bloody battle of Ia Drang Valley in Vietnam, the tough fights in Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan, and the history being written today by the brave American soldiers deployed in 140 countries around the world.  MORE

  1. I had occasion to be at Fort Brag when President Bush was to speak. There were, at least, 25,000 82nd Airborne troops on the massive grass grounds. That is the most impressive military display I have ever have ever seen in person. Some of them were over 6 feet and well north of 200 pounds. None of them were paunchy, they were all lean and mean.

  2. Hambone. The picture is of Airborne troops. They earned their Maroon Berets. However, I agree with you for the rest of the Army. Give the Black Beret back to the Rangers. Go back to the soft caps.

  3. JFK authorized the green beret for the SF back in the 60s. It should stay that way, but for the elite forces ONLY. Now, every unit seems to think it’s the best of the best of the best. They need to dump this ego fueled bullshit, and concentrate on their goddamned mission and not on how pretty they look.

  4. Happy Birthday United States ARMY,
Thank you for the 49 plus years of peaceful nights sleep that I have had under your watch.
    WITH MUCH RESPECT AND GRATITUDE,
A Grateful American Citizen and His Family
