When I watch the Mets, sometimes I like to watch the opposition’s announcers. Sort of like how I read The Daily Kos.
This was a satisfying choice. The Mets, who started tonight 5 games up on the team that was picked pre-season to win it all, the Washington Nationals, lived up to their nickname – The Amazins’.
With the Nats at bat, and winning 3-1, with the bases loaded, a single up the middle was turned into a grand slam, of sorts, when the ball took a weird bounce and went to the wall.
As the Nationals went up 7-1, Bob Carpenter, never shy about being a partisan hack in the booth, screamed, “THE ENTIRE SEASON HAS JUST TURNED ON A SINGLE AT BAT!!!”
Well, no… it didn’t.
The Mets, who still get little respect from anyone, calmly rallied back, on the road, to win the game.
Bob Carpenter is on suicide watch.
I boldly announced 1 month ago that the Mets were the best team in baseball. Many scoffed, citing the Mets record and comparing it to other teams in other leagues and divisions. I tried to explain that the Mets were no longer the team that was on the field for the first 4 months. Their current record meant nothing as far as assessing which team was presently the best.
That month, in August, the Mets went 20-8 and set a club record for total offense in any one month.
Beware the ides of October young BrutusFurious…
Stop reading Kos it will make you stupid
I have been a genuine baseball fan for fifty years. This is a fun time of year. I might start doing some real cheering for the Mets.
As far as I’m concerned my bold proclamation was correct.
20-8 in August after the Mets played virtual .500 ball up to the point in time when I made my post.
I’m happy with my prognostication.
Anyone not laughing at me could have made a boatload of money!

In the playoffs, the field narrows. You are now playing teams that are at the top of the league. You must be playing your best.
And do not forget that the KC Royals will win the World Series anyway.
Anytime my favorite baseball team plays the Nats and I am forced to watched the Nats broadcast, I always turn off the sound. Carpenter has to be the biggest home goober on the planet. Most other team announcers are very gracious in giving the opposition praise and keeping home team superlatives to a minimum. Maybe Carpenter is told to be a goober since Washington Nats have to compete with the Redskins and the sad realization that Washington fans forced how many franchises to leave town? P.S. The Mets aren’t going far in the post season.
If last night’s game were being played at Shea the old scoreboard would have lit up “KIRK”.
Remember the good old days, Hat?
GM Sandy Alderson gets MONSTER kudos for getting Cespedes who hits the ball harder than I have ever seen!!!
My 1976 vintage Yankee’s cap is off to you. The Miracles are truly on a roll.
