  1. I have absolutely NO sympathy for this dumbass. He’s no child and stealing is stealing, plus anyone who voluntarily goes to a known extremely repressive communist country HAS to know that doing something this stupid WILL have severe consequences. Sorry about your low IQ, buddy, but you made your bed. Maybe you’ll survive and your experience will help you mature into an adult.

The U.S. State Department should do absolutely nothing more than the standard “Please give him back” and they shouldn’t agree to trade him for concessions or anything more than “thanks.”

What.The.Fack is any church group doing in a country where they tell you beforehand you WILL be arrested if you even possess a bible or try to practice your faith, whether alone or with a native. Are there no other places you can go or did you expect to be arrested? If so, why are you crying about it now and why should anyone give a damn? about your low IQ, buddy, but you made your bed. 2. The only way Obama is gonna care about this is if the kid comes out as both muslim and gay. A straight white American? He couldn’t care less.

A cautionary note to student imbeciles in our country: Stay out of savage animal countries. There is nothing to see and nothing to learn. Savage animals act like savage animals no matter what your professors tell you.

  3. Sorry for the dupe paragraphs – I won’t ask for the edit button, but I _have_ to use ad blockers or I get lots of pop-unders and other crap that take forever to finish, and things like the “Post Comment” button sometimes disappear so I goofed up when trying to get it to reappear..

I’m in flyover country (very rural) and usually on very low bandwidth. When every page here takes 2-3 MINUTES to complete with 98% of that due to ads, it’s either use an ad blocker or not use the site at all. If I could afford more bandwidth or donating to the site, I’d do it. Sorry, BFH.

  4. You shall not steal is number 8 on the top ten list,
He will have 5,479 days to ponder the importance of living by that rule. And the paradox that the rule doesn’t apply to politicians and mobs, aka majority vote.

  5. Good Riddance to another Bernie supporter. I would like to personally thank North Korea for helping the U.S. clean up it’s gene pool. Maybe we should start some sort of ‘U.S. Socialist for North Korean Christians’ student exchange program.

  6. The guy tried to steal something and got caught. He deserves to be punished. But anybody who believes that 15 years at hard labor in a country where ordinary people regularly starve or freeze to death is morally no better than the NORK communist regime that sentenced him. Those who have commented that he deserves this kind of punishment for the crime he committed ought to be ashamed.

  7. @Phuzzy Logick: Try Firefox with “Reader View” addon installed. It will give you nothing but text. Text takes no time to load. Or you can also Bookmark the page thru Firefox with “Live Bookmarks” to the iotwr “feed” that will give you the front page headlines in all text that you can select articles easily and quickly, also known as “RSS.” Hope this helps.

  8. Fifteen years is a cruel and unjust sentence for the crime. He can be glad he wasn’t caught in an area controlled by ISIS, it would have cost him his head.

I’m not saying this is the case here, but universities, colleges and specific professors should be named in lawsuits for having inculcated the idea that kids can go to these countries under the shield of U.S. law.

  9. Uncle Al,
Rarely do we get what we “deserve.” And referring to a communist shit-hole like North Korea, the word means absolutely nothing.

If you swim in the septic tank, you’re gonna come out smelling like shit … I guarantee it.

  10. Taking responsibility for your actions is expected wherever you are.

But, 15 years incarceration is excessive, no doubt because he is #1 A US Citizen; #2 A Christian; and #3 He is in a oppressive Totalitarian regime.

In comparison, in Africa, the middle east and elsewhere Christians are butchered and raped just for being a Christian.

The Message is sent, but nobody does anything about it.

  11. i am with uncle al

the kid (yes 21, but a kid) made a bad bad call, could have been my kid, let me punish him

but screw noko and their freak leader

if we had leadership in this country, we wouldn’t be shit upon daily by our enemies

15 fucking years, they are slamming the us, not just the kid

screw noko, the sooner the launch and turn our light green, the better

  12. It’s evident that the U.N won’t send Hans ‘Brix’ to get him out, or even write a strongly worded letter, so all the kids has left is Team America. I’ll bet Gary’s getting re-valmorphanized right now to go in.

  13. Proof that, for the most part, young liberals are mislead. It’s too bad this young liberal has to find out the hard way what communism is all about. I feel bad for him.

  14. You expect kids in the U.S. to act like retards. They’ve been “taught” in our public schools. In N. Korea, they’d expect him to be properly indoctrinated. Of course, if it had been about “Climate Change”, this doofus would be all over that.

  15. During a TV interview, Draco, the Tyrant of Athens, was asked: “Why are all transgressions of the law punished by Death? I mean, is it fair that a pick-pocket and a Murderer receive the same penalty?”

Draco thought for a moment, and then replied: “No, it’s NOT fair, but I couldn’t think of anything worse.”

  16. I wonder what the young man’s political leanings were, and his voting record up to now?
    Seriously, do you think a republican / conservative would;
    1) Go to a repressive communist country for ANY reason, no matter how pure the motive?
    2) Would steal something, anything, especially something so small and petty – and NOT expect to be punished for that theft?

I hope he survives, and that when Trump or Cruz become President next year, that the newly revised State Department will be able to get this young man home. (sigh)

  17. @ Phuzzy Logick – I just set up a Raspberry Pi with Rasbian Jessie. The Web browser that comes with (used to be Epiphany browser) works better than my older pc’s with IE, Chrome or FF. I have pop-ups blocked but not adverts, and it’s pretty dam fast. Plus HDMI out for the flat screen. Zoom in, clear big text. Not too slow on pages with a lot of ads. Pi with power supply and case, under $60. Just a thought.

  18. @Eternal Cracker P – I use Firefox but EVERYWHERE uses pix, animations, YouTube, etc. Reader Mode or RSS is pretty much useless. I might as well not use the Internet at all. I rarely comment because I know I’m ‘stiffing’ BFH. I’m sorry IOTWReport isn’t getting the ad revenue. If the mods say “get out of here”, I’m gone.

@Uncle Al – I may be a heartless bastard and I agree the sentence was harsh, but they could have marched him outside and put a bullet through his ear. Age 21 is an adult everywhere. He is not a child, he is responsible for his own actions. Life is hard and it’s even harder when you’re stupid. Now the norks have a bargaining chip, so this asshat’s actions have hurt you and me.

If the tour organizers didn’t warn every single person in their charge about the consequences of stupidity, they’re criminally culpable too but I’d bet they not only warned them, they also got liability releases, which this ‘child’ was fully legally capable of signing. This little boy probably didn’t believe someone would actually hold him responsible. What are the odds he’s a leftist snowflake and wants his safe space, not to mention his mommy?

  19. My replies have been eaten twice so I’ll keep it short and hope this one makes it.

@eternal cracker p – Reader mode and RSS kinda make the multimedia internet useless and not worth the effort. Cable is unavailable here and dish, satellite, and cell don’t work, so 50-year-old copper is all there is.
@Uncle Al – 21 is adult everywhere and though the sentence is harsh, they could have just as easily shot him. He’s responsible for his own actions and if he didn’t think he’d have to pay the penalty in frackin’ NORTH KOREA, he should have stayed home.
@Burner – I have a Pi2 but Raspian isn’t powerful enough for everyday unless they’ve improved it a LOT in the last few months, but it ain’t gonna fix slow internet with tons of ads.

  20. Yes, thruput problems, but without pix and youtube (which buffers) all that’s left is “Trump is awful” or “Cruz is awful” or “Kasich is awful” or “Buuush!” LOL It’s the ads that chew up bandwidth. A page that takes 3 minutes to load with ads takes 10-15 seconds without. I hate to shortchange BFH but if I must take the ads, I’ll have to stop coming here — which I’ll do if he says so.

  21. OK 15 years hard labor is harsh. But NK is a harsh country, with harsh laws, a maniac for a leader who is harsh on his own subordinates. Generals and Admirals disappear. People disappear over night. Who the fuck is this 21 year old ignorant asshole to expect anything less when he and his “church” visit this shithole?
Here in this horrible racist country, America, burning Old Glory, stomping on her, desecrating her is called freedom of expression.
Mexicans, blacks, radicals, muslims do it all the time with impunity.
Bill Ayers stood on Old Glory and declared that he wished he had blown up more buildings. And his murdering bitch wife is now a professor at NYU and Columbia. He, Ayers, helped Obama become President, even wrote a book for him.
We live in two different worlds and the left’s disdain for America
boggles my mind. A guy attacks Trump,is freed by a judge, and is interviewed on CNN as a fucking hero.
I think a little NK justice here would help “straighten some minds out.”
Desecrate the flag, attack a presidential candidate, and do minimum six months lifting weights, watching TV and getting corn-holed.

  22. A large part of the reason that the ads cause so many problems is a direct result of people trying to block them.
Ads now have to run complicated scripts that are starting to border on malware.
Back when it was just a handful of freeloaders, they were ignored. Now it is mainstream and the revenue stream that allows sites like this one to operate are being threatened.
If it continues you will be required to watch a commercial and interact with it in order to get on websites.
We can’t have what we have now without ads. Fight them and you will end up with something much worse. There is no other option except shutting most of the internet down.

  23. Even if they’re going to Russia most wealthy Americans purchase ‘ransom insurance’. I guess you can’t do that for Nork. Next time try traveling nude to Medina. I mean it’s all about getting noticed on Twitter, right?
