Daily Caller- The Department of Veteran Affairs shot down a request to make its motto gender-neutral, according to a Friday report.
The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America demanded the department changed what it called an outdated and sexist motto, reported Stars and Stripes. The VA’s nearly 60-year motto is “to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan,” an excerpt from former President Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural address.
The VA responded to the November request to change its motto by saying the current motto accurately reflects “the heart of our noble mission.” But the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America was none too pleased with the refusal. read more
As a father of an active duty (female) army officer, who has been in combat, I have no problem with the change.
“They’re missing the point that women don’t feel comfortable at the VA.”
Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn about your feelings.
Military and all….
Make a counter-offer…what about changing the motto to
“If it bleeds, it leads.”
Is THAT vague, ambiguous and stupid enough for you, girl?!
The “VA center for Women Veterans” is offensive and I am triggered by it.
And they referred to the head of the organization as “she”
Put a pink pussy hat on the eagle.
Sorry but I don’t see any gender in that logo. What am I missing?
“Women” in “VA center for Women veterans”
Should be “for person veterans”
Should feminists be making the troops a sammich or something? 😉
Words are important, Lincoln knew that and he chose his words carefully.
In the original “to care for him who shall have borne the battle” references men because the scope of battle is borne by men, always has been.
“To care for those who shall have borne the battle” alters the definition of “battle” and kicks the bearers to the curb.
Times are changing, and though I’d not object to the new words the English seems inadequate and contrived.
Where are the resident English Majors here?
When the article says ‘The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America’ my guess is that it’s a couple of activist leaders claiming to speak for the organization. I’d like to see a poll of veterans, and if they want to change it I would certainly support their desire.
I visited the PTSD wards, men and women, twice each of the last 2 years on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. They all know that they are cared for, each dealing with his or her own situation. Better to focus on helping rather than on the politics of some motto.
Why can’t PHenry read? I focused on the logo/seal and missed the word ‘motto’. Sorry.
Knocking down statues, changing the Indians logo, et al is nothing but sophistry. At the end of the day it makes nothing better.
I heard that during Barky’s time, some reality-sensitive vets wanted to change the motto to “To hasten the death of morons who volunteered and to neglect and abuse their idiot families” but those vets were disappeared and the toady media never reported it.
So much winning.
So tired.
Someone PLEASE stop the winning!
Don’t like it, get your free medical shit somewhere else.
Fucking morons are pissed about a motto when Veterans are dying by the hundreds from neglect and abuse?
What’s wrong with this picture?
My Dad died after being sent home from Malcolm Grow because the “doctor” said Grow wasn’t a “chronic care facility.” (didn’t forward him to Walter Reed – just sent him home to die) Fuck these assholes. Anyone who knowingly puts himself (how ya like it?) in the hands of these butchers is lost.
