Graphic narratives by, for, and about women and nonbinary heroes

Comics have always been great for illustrating a fight—they are both serial and cinematic, giving us plenty of time to follow a hero on their adventures and plenty of gorgeous visual art to hold our interests. The folks who make comics are always using these formal strengths to punch something—from white nationalists to zombies.  The good news: in addition to all those other punchable targets, we’re currently in an era where writers and artists’ heroes punch the patriarchy, in life and art.

The bad news is, we’re all tired. And if you are as exhausted as I am, I have a proposition for you. Sometimes you have to do the fighting, sure, but sometimes you can also put on a pot of tea and immerse yourself in comic books about fictional characters delivering a knock-out, super-hero-style kick to systems of oppression.

If you’re mad as hell and in the mood for some eye candy, here are ten comic book titles for a weekend of lounging and whispering pow to yourself as you live vicariously through the characters in these comics while pumping yourself up to fight another day. All the comics listed are about women and nonbinary folks kicking ass, because sometimes you just gotta rage.

Lumberjanes

Bitch Planet Welcome to a prison planet full of women who have been jailed for being “non-compliant.” Due to the patriarchal structure of this (futuristic) world, that can mean…pretty much anything, to no one’s surprise.

(I love the left’s projection. The left punishes for non-compliance, historically.)

  1. At least they are coming up with their own super heroes and not bastardizing (is that sexist? or is it a legitimate term because it refers to men being in the wrong?) the superheroes of old. Thor is a woman? Johnny Storm (Susan’s younger brother) is now black / colored / African American, or whatever the latest term is)? Captain Marvel is now a lesbian? Superman is unable to say he is for “The American Way”?

I honestly do not care about the gender, race, sexual preferences, etc. of my superheroes. If they are for good and kicking the a$$ of the evil people (true evil, not the false evil corporations / rich people / white Christians, etc.), I am in favor of them. If they choose to shove their liberal, PC, values on me, then I will turn to something else.

    Just my opinion.

  2. I’ve been reading about feminists fighting with the lgbtwhatevers lately.
Feminists have been complaining that the lgb??? have been downgrading, trying to replace and trying to oppress women.

Well at least they’re starting to figure it out. lol

  3. “The Patriarchy” is a conspiracy by women to fool men into working 60 hour weeks for 40 years, fighting their wars, placing them on pedestals, praising their mediocrities and denying their faults. Now we are supposed to pretend we’ve oppressed them and apologize.

  4. It would disturb these broads to learn about the zero attention they are receiving from normal people. If I hadn’t heard about ir here, I would not be cognizant of its existence.

It really is of no importance to me. I’m not a comic book/superhero guy anyway. Loved superman when i was seven. Kind of left that behind.

  5. Supernightshade…
Who shot Archie? Goldwater isn’t spoiling the killer, only teasing it’s a stalker who wanted to take Keller down.

probably pin it on some white preacher.

  6. Yeah, in the late 60s my elder brother introduced me to Robert Crumb and as we rolled into the early 70s added Gilbert Shelton and as the 70s went on I found Vaughn Bode……. While my buddy who grew up across the street was an avid Marvel/DC comic guy, I leaned toward the underground stuff.
