McHack attack: McDonald’s blames compromised Twitter account after firing off insulting tweet at Donald Trump calling him a ‘disgusting excuse of a president’ with ‘tiny hands’

  • The McDonald’s Twitter account posted a message early Thursday morning attacking President Donald Trump
  • ‘@realDonaldTrump You are actually a disgusting excuse of a president and we would love to have @BarackObama back, also you have tony hands,’ it said
  • It was removed after an hour, and the company said that their account was compromised two hours after the offensive tweet went live
  • President Trump is a vocal fan of McDonald’s, and in June posted a photo with a Big Mac and fries to celebrate his Republican primary win
  • In the brief time that it was up, the message was retweeted by over 1500 users and liked over 1600 times
  • Many were also quick to comment on McDonald’s explanation for the anti-Trump tweet, wondering if it was the work of a disgruntled employee

  1. This reads like a courtroom drama. Snarky, high-dollar defense lawyer shoots off a quick personal assault against the plaintiff. The plaintiff’s lawyer cries “Objection!” The defense lawyer immediately says “Withdrawn”.

Guerrilla tactics aren’t exclusively for armed conflicts.

  2. I also thank you for the link, Texan. I feel better just commenting but don’t expect McDonald’s to do anything.
They will ride it out but I do hope it hurts them or at least stings a little. I do not believe they were hacked.

  3. Lots of better burger places out there, but when it’s 6:30 am and I an on interstate 80 driving through Bumfuch Wyoming, I’m jonesing for a McGriddle and a cup of coffee. No Five Guys or In-N-Out in sight!

  4. Any company that is large and wants a social media presence should be smart enough to create passwords and userid’s that are complex and difficult to guess. They then need to be limited to a handful of people that have the responsibility for maintaining the content as well as constantly reviewing it to ensure nothing untoward is happening. There is no way that Twitter should have been calling McD’s to let them know that their account had been hacked as McD’s should themselves have realized within 5 minutes of the breach or at least when the message was pinned. McD’s is going to have to get to the bottom of this and if it was an employee then they’re frog marched out the door for cause and an apology issued to the President. I’ll bet when some execs ask about the password they will find out it was something like 19991231 or 00000000 or 12345678. Amazing how many companies just don’t take social networking security seriously. I’ll bet that changed bunch today along with a pile of passwords.

  5. No apology to POTUS Trump?
Easy to add McD’s to the Boycott list.

Crappy and unhealthy food. In much of the country they’re attracting the same undesirable thug demographics that have hurt other brands before them.
McD’s has a disease, and hiring Obama flunkies to mishandle PR is a late stage symptom.
