Deere Moving Welding and Assembly Operation to Mexico by 2024

The Courier

John Deere’s Waterloo cab and welding operation is moving to Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, by 2024, according to the company and a union official.

Union leadership was given the news Wednesday and told ”no jobs would be affected because new product is coming in,” said United Auto Workers Local 838 President Tim Frickson.

“John Deere’s plan to bring new product programs to our operations in Waterloo, Iowa makes it necessary to consolidate the manufacturing of cabs from the Tractor and Cab Assembly Operations (TCAO) to Ramos Component Works in Mexico,” said John Deere in a statement. More

Anyone care to venture a guess why John Deere wants to make the move by 2024? – Dr. Tar

  1. WTH!?! Decades ago they made a great product. The last 10 years not so much. When our ancient tractor died we bought a new one at an inflated price. Since then it has been nothing but trouble and is in the shop once or twice a year. Since it’s a big one and we have way to transport a flat bed from the shop has to pick it up. Nothing but $$$$. The most recent repairs were estimated at $1,000. Guess we were lucky it was only $810. We’ve about had it with Deere and are considering hiring various services to do the work.

  2. Here in North Central Kansas they start training welding shop class in junior high ( yep, there are still shop classes here)….some are good, some are bad welders. They learn this stuff to take care of the farms machinery….there is NO reason to farm the welding and assembly out….

A company recently bought a 120,000 square foot building here to build farm machinery and they can’t find workers because the boys are working the farm…..It doesn’t really matter because a couple of bucks a gallon more and the farmers ain’t gonna farm and the truckers ain’t gonna truck….

Risking suffering the wrath of welders world wide, you ain’t that special. But yea, anybody on a production line that’s hand welding is wasting money, and quality.

  5. Brad, in defense of my son, who’s a welder at Bremerton Naval Shipyard, and is crawling into confined spaces to weld pipes using a mirror to see the backside of the pipe, I’d challenge any robot to get set up for that. But I know that’s not what you were referring to, I just had to get in a good word for genuine workmanship. You’re right, standard production line welding is more efficient with robotics.

..tough to get kids that can or want to weld these days. I did a ton of oxy acetylene when I was working on cars, but no one behind me bothered to learn. Now we have a 3 man fabrication shop and all are old shits like me, no young bucks coming up to learn from the master.

  7. As an older steel fab and carpenter guy I think you are right. I’m trying to teach kids now days and I have mixed results. Most are in slow motion all day long.
Some can pick it up but then they often don’t stay.
Others can’t wait to go home to conquer the world on video games.
I’m thinking they are going to starve to death when it hits the fan. 20 to 30 year olds are lost with few exceptions. Entertainment is their highest value in life.
Can’t see a communist take over to save their life.

No disrespect intended. My comment had to do with a lot of contractors I run into that want to charge $250.00/hour and couldn’t hold a hermetic bead if their life depended on it. Couldn’t spell welder yesterday and to day I is one. And honestly I have run into some extremely talented welders. But that is the exception.

  9. Brad, I know exactly what you’re saying. Production line welders can easily be replaced with robotics. I just had to support the genuine first class welders out there that really do a hell of a job. Can you imagine struggling to get into a confined space and then weld a pipe on a submarine and all you have is a mirror to see the backside? My son’s pass rate is exceptionally high, there are welds that only a few guys are allowed to do. He’s among them. He does good, right now on vacation in Hawaii.

Dude, I’m claustrophobic. I freak out pulling a tee shirt over my head. I can’t imagine. Especially with a flame and smoke and visor. Oh fuck me. Presented some real mental challenges when I was going thru the shit.
