14 Comments on Escalator in China Suddenly Goes in Reverse

  1. I don’t think it actually went into reverse. I think something broke in the drivetrain and the step chain just freewheeled downward due to the weight of the passengers.
Escalators in the US have locking clutches to prevent this from happening. I guess the Chinese copycats left that out to save money.

  2. I once saved a child who’s shoe got stuck at the top step.
    His mother was freaking out.
I climbed over them and hit the emergency stop.

We pulled his foot out and I tore the shoe up removing it from the escalator jaws.
I told her to go make the manager buy her son a new pair.
