Kathy Griffin enlists celeb lawyer to respond to ‘bullying from the Trump family she has endured’
Just as the controversy surrounding the image of Kathy Griffin holding what appears to be a bloody fake severed head of President Trump appeared to be dying down, comes word that the comedian has enlisted celebrity lawyer Lisa Bloom to explain why she shot the image and to respond to the Trump family’s alleged bullying.
Bloom, who has represented women who have accused Bill Cosby and Bill O’Reilly of harassment, tweeted Thursday night, “Proud to announce that I represent Kathy Griffin. We will be holding a press conference tomorrow morning.”
A press release Bloom tweeted reads, “Earlier this week, Ms. Griffin released a controversial photograph of herself posing with a faux-bloody mask of Donald Trump‘s face. Ms. Griffin and Ms. Bloom will explain the true motivation behind the image, and respond to the bullying from the Trump family she has endured.”
Speedy projectile, noggin. Now.
Is anyone surprised? Ambulance-chasing celebrity lawyer and, ah, a celebrity, trying to cash in on a quick settlement. They have no idea they’ve got a man-eating tiger by the tail.

Most “celebrity lawyers” aren’t all that good as real lawyers. They announce they have been retained by Famous Celebrity, hold a press conference, and then try to settle the claims for something and fade away.
Griffin’s photograph was tasteless and offensive, but Donald Trump is a public figure, and there isn’t anything he can do about it in a court. But Griffin is also a public figure, so the tweets by Donald, Melania and Donald Jr. expressing their displeasure with Griffin’s stunt are not actionable in court either. No lawyer with even a passing familiarity with defamation law would touch a case like this – particularly on behalf of the person who started it.
Of more concern is Bloom’s attempt to claim bullying. There is a movement in California to make “bullying” actionable in court, and these efforts are disturbing for a number of reasons. “Bullying” is a vague concept and means many different things to many different people. It is also, in my opinion, a way to circumvent the First Amendment by claiming that bullying is not protected speech. But this is a concept more and more civil rights attorneys are pushing, and it must be stopped.
Obviously the SS hasn’t showed up for her yet. It’s time
they should.
