VAT is loved by Kleptocrats because you can raise taxes on your enemies by merely altering what constitutes a “value added transaction”.
Yeah, the government will decide then value is added and could create thousands of taxable points between the dirt and the checkout. The cost to businesses for bookkeeping will be onerous.

This VOX article referred to Cruz’s plan as having a VAT. I went to his website and only found this:
“Essential to abolishing the IRS is wiping clean the cob-webbed tax code and starting over with the Cruz Simple Flat Tax, which sets one low rate of 10 percent for all individuals and enables them to fill out their taxes on a postcard or smartphone app. The Simple Flat Tax also taxes all businesses at the same, fair Business Flat Tax of 16 percent, removing the loopholes and backhanded funding of big businesses and special interests. The Simple Flat Tax fundamentally changes the tax code and abolishes the IRS as we know it. The remaining personnel needed can be housed in a drastically smaller division of the Department of Treasury.”
Other articles on the web refer to this 16 percent “business flat tax” as a VAT, but none give any specifics. They also mention he discussed it during one of the debates in 2015. I don’t recall hearing about him mentioning a VAT.
I had assumed until now that this 16% was a corporate income tax. Not a VAT.
Does anyone have any substantive information on this supposed VAT? I can’t find anything that provides any details on a Cruz VAT proposal.
Bernie’s plan takes my breath away. I would pay about double the Federal taxes I pay now.
After taxes, housing expenses, groceries, and medical, I would have about $1,000 a month for everything else–veterinary care for the cats, utilities, phone/Internet, transportation, haircuts, toiletries, donations and gifts, etc. I guess I would have to go nekkid everywhere, since this scenario does not allow me to buy clothing. And God forbid I might want to escape my grim reality by going to a movie.

Got some bad news. EVERY fuckin ONE pays taxes. More than once on EVERY fuckin THING you buy, sell, eat, sit on, sleep in, or piss in. Think about the trail of a single item you consume. From inception to design to raw materials to manufacture to transportation to wholesale to further transportation to retail to your domicile. It is taxed at EVERY fuckin STEP of the way, multiple times in income taxes, excise taxes, sales taxes, inventory taxes, personal property taxes, &c.
And the miracle of mass production and free markets, is that IT’S STILL AFFORDABLE!
Unless and until HRC, BS, Kasich, or some other socialist gets in and further fucks up the works.
