  1. Days Of Future Past was actually commissioned to sell console stereos. That’s why the mix of rock with symphony music.

Between my two brothers and I, we owned four copies of that album. Why there was an extra copy I don’t remember.

  2. The Moody Blues was a lot more than one song. Their catalog was quite extensive. “In Search of the Lost Chord” was the follow up to “Days of Future Past” and it stands well on its own.

I bought a 5 album CD set this winter of the other albums they recorded in the 70s. I have a hard time picking a favorite from them all, though “For Our Children’s Children’s Children” is also quite good. A “Question of Balance” has the best album cover of the lot.

  3. An entire generation of 60s/70s rock icons have aged to their final years. We’re going to see a lot of this. What’s startling is seeing their photos as old people.

  4. I got to know their music very well. When they were in their heyday, I was trying to get in the pants of a young lady who absolutely adored Moody Blues. She lusted after Graeme Edge and wanted to bear his children.

My opinion of their music? Mostly excellent with an unfortunate admixture of schlock. Perhaps my outlook is colored by never getting into said young lady’s knickers. Alas.

All that aside, they were a top-notch band and I’m sad to hear of Pinder’s passing. RIP sir, and say Hi to the rest of the guys for me.

  5. Maybe my favorite band for a long period of time. Days of Future Passed was actually the first full album I every bought, and I always wondered why the Moody Blues were passed over by the Rock Hall of Fame for 50 years.

  6. They were one of the first to utilize a full philharmonic orchestra as background. Deep Purple, Jethro Tull and the Beatles (to an extent) did the same but most of the more recognizable tunes used a full throttled string section to build the crescendo.

  7. “I know your out there somewhere ” Brings back alot of past memories, most of which I’m not proud of.but there in the past. “The man I once was, I nolonger am. The man I am today is by the grace and mercy of God,and the man I will be is by His continual working in my life.and when HE calls me home, then and only then will I be complete. <

…well, by your own admission YOUR quest didn’t succeed, but did HERS?

  9. @SNS — Nope. She eventually hooked up with the nerdiest, most girly-man jerk in our circle of friends and the two of them spent years sniping at each other and reveling in rubbing each other’s face in their shortcomings and failures.

Oh. Do I sound bitter? 😁

  10. @SNS, Praise the Lord, all of those problems were solved long, long ago. The better woman and I been very happy for decades now.

To put things in a proper historical/chronological perspective: all my Moody Blues albums were on eight-track tapes.

…my favorite part of any long song on an 8-track was where you were in the most intese part of the song and it goes ***brrrrrRRR ¡CLICK!, and repeats a bit of what you just heard…

  12. They were one of the best concerts I ever went to. It was the late 80s or early 90s. Full orchestra and the sound was terrific.

I think I’ll listen to them now.

  14. We won’t see music like this in our life time ever again.
Saw them many times always a great show.
They were the masters of inter space, and Pink Floyd was the master of outer space.
    A big loss.

  15. The Moody Blues were my favorite band back in the late 60’s and early 70’s and they still sound as good if not better than when my best friend and I would listen to them 50 or more years ago. On Saturday nights when his parents were out square dancing, we would listen to them on their console hi fi stereo and have a good time listening to the Moody Blues. The Moody Blues music was part of my youth that has never gotten old. Hey, even 71- year-old guys still like good music and still play it loud although as not as loud as I used to. And it wasn’t even better yet when my best friend got a pair of Bose 901 speakers with a great amplifier when he was in the Navy and the clarity on those speakers was amazing.

  16. My fav was On The Threshold Of A Dream. The way it starts and ends is wonderful, like you’re just floating in space and come across this music…oh wait…we are just floating in space.

Here’s the beginning of that album with the first track-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AukFsBv2oDYM

  17. Whenever I pick up an acoustic guitar there are a few Moody Blues songs I sing.

Tuesday Afternoon, The Story In Your Eyes, Nights…, and Gypsy.

I cracked the top of my Taylor doing the percussive part of Nights.

    RIP

  18. Their discography is one I need to revisit. Need to get a new turntable. Ya, I can pull it all up online, but I just want to sit in my back room and drop the needle on the old vinyl on a lot of artists.

Long Distance Voyager from ‘81 I am most familiar with.

  19. Ginger, Because you mentioned it, I’m now mainlining “Go now” through hearing aids into my 77 year old ears from a playlist on my iPhone. It was a great time to grow up and not a bad time to grow old.
