Update 9:35 a.m. EDT June 24: Surfside City Manager Andrew Hyatt said Thursday that search, rescue and recovery efforts are likely to continue for days following a partial building collapse that left one person dead and at least two people injured.

“This is not going to be something that is going to be brief,” he said at a news conference as officials continued to search the partially collapsed Champlain Towers South building. “This is something that’s going to be for the long term and possibly — at least a week.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Ray Jadallah said officials were using their heavy rescue equipment and working to shore up the inside of the building as they continued to tunnel into the rubble to find survivors.

“A massive search and rescue is underway,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Danielle Levine Cava said. “Every minute in this search can make a huge difference.”

Officials have established a family reunification hotline at 305-614-1819. People searching for information about loved ones who might have been affected can also submit inquiries online.

  1. I thought only buildings in China and third world countries collapse. With all the stringent building codes, I would think that a building would last forever in this country. We aren’t safe anywhere!

  2. The substrate in much of Fla is not stable and you have to drive a pile foundation. My best guess is that is where the catastrophic failure emanated from. If it were up to me the foundation on top of the pile caps should also be a diaphragm and able to carry the load above in case of piling failure where you have building on questionable soils.

That is just a WAG regarding the mechanism of failure, but it is based on what experience in structural failure and a guess as to what the soils are like in that specific area. Fla is known for having iffy soils

  3. Looks like the tower connection to the wing failed first, then the tower itself collapsed leaving the impression that an entire bulding fell

Terrible, the death count seems rather low at this point for such an epic collapse.

I pray it stays that way.

  4. Miami is a 3rd World Sh*thole….Bribes and Substandard Construction….

Remember that Bridge that collapsed during Construction?

Here in Monroe County, You can hire Your Own Inspector …No Conflict of

    interest there…

  5. @JDHasty: “…top of the pile caps”

I wonder if they use ‘battered piles’, which are piles that are driven at an angle. I did a large building for Lufthansa and FedEx once and perimeter and interior pilings had both straight and battered piles.

  6. Maybe I haven’t seen enough, but how is it that someone just happened to be shooting a video when the building collapsed? It sure seemed to be a bit shaky for a mounted security camera, and it seemed to be pretty high up to be useful for a security camera anyway.
