And for the most shocking news of the day…

I’ll give you all time to compose yourselves and orient yourselves squarely on your seats because this might put you on the floor.

Ready?

Barry Manilow announced that he’s gay.

Shocking.

Also, Rosie O’Donnell announced that she is fat.

Manilow said, naively, that he thought his fans wouldn’t like him anymore, completely oblivious to the fact that his fan base is primarily gay.

Manilow, for the most part, is apolitical in public, which puts him on the list of entertainers that don’t annoy me – despite his music. (He single-handedly made me hate the french horn and multiple key changes.)

  1. If you read the article, you’ll see he actually married a girl out of High School. He is not the typical angst ridden questioning teen, but rather more comfortable with his situation.

His music is still a guilty pleasure for most of us raised in the ’70s and ’80s. I have no problem with this, and wish him the best.

FYI – I still consider the song “Can’t Smile Without You” an homage to the lips.

  2. I appreciate Mr. Manilow keeping it to himself all these years.

I was thinking of doing a mash up title post earlier this morning, mixing Tony Romo retiring and Barry Manilow coming out, but decided against it. I’m all for letting the man alone, so long as he doesn’t try to make his personal behavior a political statement.

  3. I would like to say I’m not gay.

When I was much younger I noticed Barry was an odd man.
    Barry has woman like mannerisms.
    He acts very feminine
I did not know anything at the time about homosexual behavior I just
knew something was not right with this guy.
I think Johnny Mathis might also be gay

  4. My one Maniliow trivia:
“Mandy” was originally titled “Brandy”. But then Looking Glass released “Brandy” (you’re a fine girl) so he went with a rhyme-alike.

  5. Manilow is GAY!?!?! MANILOW?!?! What’s next – Anthony Weiner is a pervert?!?! Ted Kennedy was a murderer?!?!
Talk about a desperate 11th hour bid to revive a career with the fastest path to Celebrity Protected Status.
He was Bette Midler’s piano player in the flaming gay baths in the 1970s for Godsake!! Is there a fan on earth who thought he just “hadn’t met the right woman?”
Ok, he’ll never be the manly man that Liberace was, but still!

  6. I’m a software engineer. I learned about Allen Turing’s work in computer science. I could have lived my entire professional life using and admiring his work. I did not need to know that he was homosexual. (I refuse to use the word “gay” because they don’t seem very happy). Similarly, I use and admire the work of Noam Chomsky in computer science will ignoring his horrible opinions on politics and religion.

  7. Never listened to much Fairy Antelope myself, unless all representatives were busy assisting other customers and I had to remain on the line so that my call would be answered in the order in which it was received.

  8. 🙁
    Seriously?
Why not keep it in the closet, Barry, and not tarnish your memory? That’d be nice.
I used to listen to a lot of his stuff when I was 15, and going through some hard times. It was cheesy, sappy, and really lovely sometimes. God, I feel so sad now.
